Under a member's location it has a distance, say 450klm. 450klm
from where?

I believe it's from YOUR registered location, as saved in your Profile.
(Your post shows you are in Margaret River, 3,825 km from me in Brisbane, which would be about right "as the crow flies".)
Hi Raymo,
I've always assumed with respect your own location.
So in my case I see you in Margaret River as 3,450km from me.
It will be all done through the magic of what programmers call a SMOP - a Simple Matter Of Programming.
How can that be Gary and Julian?
The figure must refer to the distance between the individual user and a fixed point - NOT the distance between two individual users surely.
MIKE - HELP!
Edit: I take it back. Seems like SMOPs rule Gary and Julian. Raymo shows up as 277km from me in Perth, which the Big G assures me is more or less spot on. Sigh, another lost argument :(

I think Gary and Julian are right. The person who just commented on one of my pics is shown as 246klms, which is his distance from me.

yes you are listed as 246km from me also

You show up as 204km from me Pat, and according to our location, we're both in Perth.
I know Perth is expanding, but not at THAT rate - surely !

That's because your coordinates are located offshore from Perth to the west... I suspect you typed in an incorrect longitude into your profile.
Perth is in the 115 East range, your profile show 113 E.
OIC!
Hey OIC,
It's all coming back to me.
That's exactly right buddy, I'd forgotten I'd done that. It was intentional and as a result of a thread many years ago where someone highlighted the concept of a potential thief looking at your signature to see what goodies you have, and then homing in on your co-ordinates as shown in your location to cone and nick your stuff.
It seemed a worthwhile thing to do at the time, and many people did likewise. On reflection, the chances of that happening seem minimal at best.

It's a "trivial" piece of spherical trigonometry to derive the distance and bearing of one location to another.
With your apparently dodgy location IIS has you 3,436km from me. Using Geoname Australia's location for Margaret River (township) I get a bearing from here of 259.024 degrees and great circle distance of 3391.8 Km (1830.26 Nautical Miles, 2107.57 Statute Miles).
Hey Pat,
Save me figuring it out myself buddy, - what number do I enter then, lol ;)

I didn't expect my question to result in such an entertaining thread.
