Hello, Im posting this to see if there is any one out there willing to bring their telescope to set. (location Sydney metro) Its for a CBA commercial and needs to be very impressive in size and aesthetic. As big or larger than a human.
We are very happy to pay a hire fee for someone with the right Telescope.
It will not be used, it will only be standing next to an actor as a hero prop clearly in shot.
Alternately we could also pick it up and return it to its owner but I would be happier with the owner present.

Would a 12-inch solid-tube dob suit?? Or were you looking for something bigger??

Dave he said he would like one as big or bigger than a human, probably a 16" truss dob or bigger
Unless of course a large SCT on a big mount might be the go.
I would offer but I live too far away. ;)
A truss dob? Are you kidding? He said he wants a telescope, not a light bucketting contraption. For a TV commercial addressing a wide audience I would expect to see a big refractor on a tripod and EQ mount in the background. That is by far the most telescopic looking thing there is :D:P:scared3::poke:.

got a 5" refractor on eq mount that when assembled is larger than a person (well larger than me at least) not sure how i'd get it to bondi beach though.

Perhaps it's time for popular culture to see a real telescope for a change?? :D

My 16inch truss Newtonian is available, I'm located in the inner west of Sydney.
It stands about 190cm tall and is around 50cm in diameter. It is on wheels so can be move fairly easily.

a 16" dob or bigger makes a skinny refractor look like a toy they are
Only used as a gloryfied telephoto lens today anyway.
Nobody ever looks through them anymore. :P

Now that's a scope. :D
Cheers:thumbsup:
Someone with a huge 20" or bigger SDM put their hand up, please.
Those scopes are beautiful. If I see a Chinese made Meade/Celestron/GSO/Skywatcher in this ad rather than a nice Aussie made scope, I'm gonna hurl.

could always see if Mike is willing to ship his 70" over.
There is an Australian-made 30" SDM here in Sydney ...
Mmmmm depends who the actor is he needs to be pretty hot to out do the look of the hot sexy huge telescope you know....
hehe if I seen the ad I would be like what actor lmfao hahaha ;) :P
We'd all be even happier if you could convince the bank to lower its
fees, pay depositors more interest and have the CEO and Board of
Directors donate a year's salary to the fight against Ebola in West Africa. :)

I'm with Gary,I'm also sure that the CBA can afford to buy any scope it wants.

They used a C14HD and a CGE Pro mount in the Thor movie. It's bigger and taller then any person shorter than 7 feet.

I would think that Tim Wetherells refractor would have been ideal for this project....shame he sold the refractor...but he did keep the mount.

You can use my 20" SDM so long as Brian Cox is in the commercial.

The problem is that regardless of how beautiful some of these giant
scopes are, many people with no knowledge of telescopes would barely realise that they are in fact telescopes. You need a large equatorially
mounted refractor, or reflector.

+1 no matter how fickle we are about what WE think a telescope looks like, the broadcast TV watching populace would only see a canon or missile launcher (Dob), or a garbage bin on legs (Martian?) if it were an SCT
I'd recommend a decent sized refractor for this. My largest is only a 4" but looks pretty ;) see http://skylight-telescopes.com

I got a 6" f12 Refractor plus extra scopes…think Unitron on an old EQ mount but because it's for a bank…forget it, what a bunch of parasites.
Also I'm in the right city…Melbourne.

very funny collection of ideas.
Thats why I love IIS so, yes I do !!!
I go with the SDM and a person fiddling with collimation and a ladder in the background whilst another person wows the crowd with a solar scope!:D

indeed, could be dangerous with a 20" truss in the daytime, you could accidentally set the crew on fire due to angle of the sun on the mirror  or at a minimum blind half the crew.

Foo,
The obvious one you should ask is Sydney Observatory. I'd also suggest CBA can afford to make an appropriate donation; I for one don't see why anyone here should do this for free.

Wavy,
I was definitely not asking for a freebie. When hiring a prop there is always money exchanged. Thanks for posting.

Trevor, Hi thanks for your post. I will include your photo in my photos of available Telescopes. Then it is up to the director for the final say. I will come back to you asap and also let you know either way. Thanks again! Ant

It could also be an opportunity to remind people of the Astronomy hobby :) perhaps a well placed "Ice in Space" decal?

As much as I like this idea, someone like me will just have to remove it in post...

I could possibly bring along a big 30" ƒ/4.5 SDM dob which might be suitable for the TV shoot? Image attached for reference...
Or perhaps a 'smaller' 25" ƒ/5 if that was better.
Let me know if either sounds sounds suitable.
Cheers,
Lachlan.
