An eclipse and a comet.

Just not in the same frame. Now wouldn't that be something. I managed a couple of eclipse snaps between comet 2013 A1 Siding Spring captures. The comet pic was taken at totality, 14 x 1 minute subs. More details in the pic.

The eclipse was taken with an ED80 at F5.5 on a tripod, 0.5 second, Pentax K-5.

Good one Kevin. You had me wondering for a moment with your title lol. The last time I saw a comet during an eclipse was in 1986 when comet Halley was an easy naked eye target (during the eclipse). I did not have my camera or scope with me and missed out on a great photo oportunity :(.

Exactly the images I had wanted to make, clouds beat me...
Really like the contrast of the comet and cluster.
Hoping Mars has a better view soon.

I was thinking about it but went and got a nightscape out in the wheat paddocks instead. :)

Same here Rick! I regret not shooting Halley during the eclipse. Instead I photographed the eclipse. Now 28 years later that eclipse is forgotten but not the comet. This time I wanted to get it right. So I did both.

Great pics, and great that you took the opportunity while the sky was dark to get the comet. It's still so dim, far too dim for me to observe it yet thru light pollution.:sadeyes: Comet Oukaimeden on the other hand was awesome to observe. I had a dream of a comet last night- thru my eyepiece at the scope, it had a wide tail and streamers running off it everywhere, oh it was so coooool!

Hi Peter - Uranus was only within a couple of degrees of the Moon. It was in opposition at the time of eclipse. Tho I didn't realise the opposition part until much later in the night :rolleyes:- should've checked my calender doh. It was under mag.6 (5.87 or something if I remember correctly ?). I saw it in my 10x60 binoculars :D.

Seems it had too much competition with the Moon doing its thing!

Sorry Suzy, didn't mean to nearly give you a heart attack. ;) I've only observed 2013 A1 visually when it was at it's peak near 47 Tuc, and even that was a challenge. It's quite dim now and probably be even dimmer by the time it reaches Mars. I'm not sure I will even be able to separate it from the glare photographically, mag -1 verses mag11.
