View Full Version here: : Heart Nebula (Sh2-190/IC1805) in narrowband

The Heart Nebula is an emission nebula in the northern constellation of Cassiopeia. This is a narrowband image taken from a scope I share at SRO in California. The second image is the core of the Heart, an open cluster called Melotte 15.

The gear used was a Tak FSQ-106ED on a Paramount ME with a QSI683 camera. Subs were 12x1800s Ha, 17x1800s OIII, 20x1800s SII and a smattering of RGB.

Processed in PixInsight, of course. I used drizzle integration and was very happy with the result. It was upsampled from a native resolution of just over 2 arcsec/pixel to around 1 arcsec/pixel.

High res here: http://www.astrobin.com/122474/ and here: http://www.astrobin.com/122475/

Hope you like it. Constructive criticism is always welcome...

Cheers,
Rick.

Stunning capture and processing. Don't suppose you could move that thing about 40 degrees south on the sky?

Thanks, Greg & Rod!

Ta, Steve. I'm sharing a scope at Sierra Remote Obs in California with 6 other folks.

Thanks, Rob. My wife calls the narrowband images "Jesus pictures" because they apparently remind her of the Sistine Chapel ceiling :)

Thanks, Simon. Drizzle did a great job of upsampling. I suppose that 1 arcsec seeing helps too

Thanks, Kevin. I moved a fair way from the colours of the original SHO combine.

Ta, Bob!

Thanks, Simon.

Thanks, John. The extra resolution is great. The only thing I don't like is the star bloat that I suspect comes from a combination of the microlenses and shallow well depth.

Thanks Louie & Steven!

Thanks, Mike :)

Ta, Marc. I cheated a little and used a scope in the Northern hemisphere.

Thanks Chris & H!

Always kinda strange seeing northern objects posted in here especially when taken by southern hemisphere dwellers..it's like there is something not quite right about it

Nah, really great result mate and like others have commented, the colours look good too, must be so cool having access to the northern sky?

It seems a bit like cheating Mike, but I like it

It's very cool, Marc. I sit here at work and just about every afternoon new data starts magically appearing on my disk :D

Now you're just showing off.... :P CC some our way we've got big mailboxes ;) Very cool stuff though. I was checking the seeing graphs. Sick.

Amazing really.
The detail is 3D , remarkable.
What next for the " amateurs " ?
Rick, I love your work and I admire that you are kind to us scrabbling up that hill like Sisyphus, not all the "greats" are so amenable to advice.
You should count yourself Sir Rick- of the dark sky .
Cheers

Beautiful Image Rick, I like the way you have reduced the stars enough to really show the nebula.

Well Done

Thanks, Graham, but I think you're being too generous. By virtue of my background and training I have some good technical chops but my sense of aesthetics still has a long way to go :) Access to good data helps a lot, of course!

Thanks, Geoff!

Yep that is rather nice. I really like the colours, the field of view and the tiny stars. The detail is very nice too.

That is exactly the same rig I have except I am not at 4000m. I have been considering a remote setup in the SRO for the last 6 months, this image is not helping me say no to that idea.

So much detail, they almost look over-sharpened in the thumbnails, but the hi-res pics are stunning Rick.

Excellent image Rick.

You got good contrast and very nice colors.

Did you add some articial spikes?

Thanks, Justin! The gear and the site make me look good ;)

Thanks, Paul! It's nice to have seeing that's better than the resolution of the gear for a change. I'm hoping we'll get a long FL instrument on that mount at some stage.

Ta, Erik.

Thank you, Rob. The big image is 64 megapixels as a result of the drizzle so bringing them down to 200kB isn't going to provide a good representation.

Thanks, David! I'm just putting the final touches on the Wizard Nebula and I have several more queued up.

Thanks, Geert. I didn't add any spikes. I think what you can see on a few of the brighter stars is from the microlenses on the KAF-8300 sensor. I have a Starlight Express camera with the same sensor that also does this.

Just reading about drizzle today, understand what you're saying about images being 4 times bigger. Looks like a great addition to PI, and certainly put to great use on this one Rick.

It's not always that good, Mike. Sometimes the seeing gets as bad as 1.5 arcsec :D

Thanks, Marco!
