Final Helix,10 hours.

Hi,

Well this my final crack at the Helix with my unmodded canon 1100D.
I'm not getting much more of the outer loop, really need a modded camera for the Ha.

Happy with the details in the nebula, tendrils stand out quite well. One thing I do notice that the unmodded camera picks up that is absent in CCD and modded camera images is the faint nebulosity that seems to overlay the outer rim.


Unmodded canon 1100D, baader type III coma corrector.
10 hours data ISO 1600 and 800.
Stacked in DSS, processed in PS7 and Cs2.

really nice Justin, the helix is my current work in progress.
how long were your subs if you don't mind me asking?
filters are probably needed for the outer loop.. I haven't seen a dslr really showing it properly.

I used 5 minute subs at ISO 1600 and 8 minutes at ISO 800.

Filters may work with a modded dslr won't work with an unmodded camera unfortunately or at least not very well, apart from an LP filter of course.

Great image Justin! Have you thought about Astrobin for a less compressed image?

An LP filter may help with some extra Ha, even from a dark sky site as they reduce natural skyglow.

Yeah your probably right, I started with photobucket and all my images are on there.

I have an LP filter and must try what your saying, but never did like the green tinge.
I guess it's a matter of learning how to process it out.

Green? Must be one for visual use? There are a couple that cause minimal to no colour shift. The Baader Semi-Apo, Astronomik UHC-E and I believe one of the IDAS models. If Skywatcher have cloned the Semi-Apo closely then that would work on the cheap.

Nice job Justin; like several others, the Helix is also a work in progress for me. I'm pushing ---- uphill, as I don't have any means of guiding. I might have to do some manual guiding on it.

The filter is astronomic clip in filter for Canon camera's, definitely for imaging.

How long can you go?
I know with reasonable polar alignment, my Heq Pro5 was getting two minute exposures without guiding.

If you are restricted it may be worth doing some high ISO shots to blend in with say 800 ISO.
Just stack them separately in DSS and then blend them together in PS 7.

Okay, might be the CLS. It does have a colour cast. It sometimes causes red channel clipping with my unmodified camera if temps are too high. But when it works it works well.

If I get PA down around 10 secs or better, I can just about manage 120 secs. Can take me quite a while to get down to those figures though.
Will have a go with mixed ISOs.

very nice depth in the image Justin. Some of the stars are a bit distorted, but the overall effect is still very convincing and there is a luminosity that is missing from NB images.

The stars have always been the main problem in this image,
not sure of the exact cause, appears in some subs and not others.
