:D Well , here is a continuation of my thread concerning my Long Perng 60mm triplet .

I was in an Australian Geographic shop last week and they had this 70mm f11 achromat on a strange looking alt/az mount , I had not seen anything like it , it is similar to the AZ3 mount ? , anyway it was on sale for $200 so , what the hey ? I grabbed it .

Getting it home and setting up , which took all of about 10 miniutes , but the supplied manual was very good so a newby would not have any problems .

Ok I grabbed this solely for the mount as I had been looking for one , and for only $200 { fathers Day special ? } it looked good , easily up to the task of holding the LP60mm , but I soon discovered that it suffered from the 'AZ3 droop' that is at about 45 degrees and above the OTA takes a backward dive ,, the dreaded AZ3 Droop, bugger  , so what to do , what to do ??? .

This is what I knocked up at work , a stainless steel 10mm threaded rod mounted under the dovetail at about 50 degrees pointing down with 2 small counter weights screwed on so they are moveable by turning them , and you know what ? it works a treat the OTA now happily points to the zenith , nice ..
I have a small knob on the way ( Thanks Matt ) as the slomo altitude knob fouls with the focuser , but that's no big deal .
I will fill the bottom 1 inch diameter tripod sections with sand to give it a little more stability , its ok as is but a little more weight wont go amiss .

On the slo/mo alt and az adjustments they are smooth with no backlash and are 360* worm and wheels , a nice setup .

One more strange thing is that the whole head is adjustable in latitude ( you can see this rod pointing down under the mount head in the first photo ) , it even has degree markings on the shaft , like the Meade ETX psudo EQ mounts have , I have no idea why ? as it wont work well without counter weights , AG probably thought it looked scientific ? , no bother as when its locked down its nice and solid .

All in all a good little mount for my LP triplet .

A quick word on the 70mm f11 , it looks well made with good coatings , a 1 1/4 inch P&P focused that seems solid , a red dot finder , 1 1/4 inch diagonal , clamshell with Vixen dovetail mounded into the bottom and the real surprise was the 2 x Super Plossls of 10 and 25mm and of good quality , these are almost worth as much as the whole set up , a very nice touch indeed .
I will test this OTA and probably remount it if its good and either sell it on or give it away to an aspireng young amature astronomer .

Enjoy the photos , its today wiewing the sun using my Hershell wedge , and :eyepop: there is some massive sun spots at the moment .

Comments welcome as always .

Well done Brian.
Wondering how that scope performs looking at getting one or maybe the 66mm cf one they sell not sure which one would suit my camera.

The counter weight system is a clever solution Brian and the mount looks like a great bit of kit.
It reminds me of the one Celestron sell there 90mm achro on, though yours seems better thought out and more robust. Can't beat the price.

The mount looks similar to the Mizar K Mount. I have one, and might borrow your idea as it has a long refractor on it.

 John , you are more than welcome to , it makes the mount so much more user friendly .

I had my Mizar 80mm refractor out last night together with a 8" dob looking at the lunar eclipse - before the clouds and rain came in. I don't have a problem with the f/11 refractor when aiming quite high.

On the Mizar K mount, there is a probably a strange looking thing, with a bolt going through it - just on the altitude axis and under the ota mount - I believe that this is the part that clamps onto the axis so if your ota is slipping at high alt's, that might be a little loose. Just a thought anyway - the counterweight idea works too.

Well its been a while, as my home computer is not playing well with my Nokia phone any more , so here is an update via the sweet Dell laptop I grabbed off Stefan .

First up is the first day time shots taken of a Telstra tower from my old Mate Brian's place in Mandurah , 25mm silver top plossl , a sweet eyepiece
I would love some feed back on this shot , as usual my Nokia 1020 hand held .

Second up is today after work , yea I know its sunday , but someone has to pay for my astronomy habit . :P.
Its my new TV Sol searcher stuck on with double sided tape and this device is excellent ! , works a treat .
The others are the massive sun spot visable at the moment , man its a monster :eyepop: , taken using my Lunt Hershel wedge .
As always comments most welcome .
Cheers guys .

Yep, that is some big sunspot!
I can confirm that is a verrry nice scope and a great performer at an absurdly low price. Shame you focused on that tower though, the one at the other end of the street is home to a couple of eagles...interestingly the Telstra boys avoid going up there at this time of year...wonder why?

 Thanks Brian. , seems that because this ain't no top ( read expense. ) Japanese scope its not even worth a reply , :help: .
Am I wasting my time , I had a 60 mm (read expense. ) Japanese scope and I would put this 499'$ scope against it any day. , don't care if I ruffle a few feathers here,,,,,

Well, I'm impressed. That Telstra tower shot is crisp. sharp and shows a remarkable lack of CA. Colours are nice too,.
I reckon that's a score mate, and with an actual camera* :-) hooked up it should be capable of some seriously nice widefields.

Hey Brian,

Just looked at your shot of the Telstra tower. That is very sharp!!!

I'm enjoying your posts about this scope. I find that I'm using my SV66ED almost every clear night as it's always mounted on a camera tripod beside the balcony door and can be lifted out in one hand. So I've finally started learning some of the features of the moon, been enjoying open star clusters and even learning to star hop with Sky Safari on my tablet. Even though I'm limited by lots of light pollution, this little scope has got me observing more regularly than ever before. :)

Noticed the LP 60mm triplet isn't listed on the Andrews site any more. Must have sold out after all the publicity!

They still have the 66mm doublet though. It's the same as my Stellarvue so also a nice scope.

Hi Brian,

They are a lovely little 60mm refractor aren't they! I picked one up from Andrews a few weeks ago and love it!!! I was looking at the moon with it last night and couldn't see any chromatic aberrations. I could just make out the four main stars of the Trapezium in Orion Neb with an 8mm ethos - surprisingly sharp stars and lots of nebulosity - very impressed for such a small (and crazy cheap!!!) scope. I'm really enjoying it and I hope you really enjoy yours too.

 Thanks Chris , seems like its our gain and the many who have looked and not bothered ( they are above such scopes ? ) ;s loss , but yes they are very good .
