Good bye Winter Milky Way

Another shot from Bretti, this time with the big tree in the middle of the camp site and the Winter Milky Way setting behind it.

Shot with the Canon 6D and 16-35mm f/2.8L II Lens. This is a single 30 second exposure at f/2.8, 16mm, ISO3200.

Nice work, and great processing on the shot. How do you find the 16-35mm as a star lens?

Thanks guys. Yeah Mike I really liked that tree and had been hoping to get a shot like this for a while now.

That's true Greg still some time for more imaging.

Matt, yeah its a great lens for astro work. Basically because of the max aperture of f/2.8. It does show vignetting wide open and the stars shapes start to look like comets around the edges of the frame. Stopped down to say f/4 and its almost all gone. As you can see in this image I shot it wide open at f/2.8 and it really doesn't detract from the overall image, well it doesn't bother me anyway. So yeah, all in all, a great piece of glass for very wide astrophotography on a full frame camera.

Thanks for the info Jason, I really should have spent the extra money early on and got this lens over the 17-40 (but that decision was made before getting into astro work) I have the 24mm f1.4 and stop it down to f2.8 most of the time to help with the coma and now have the bower 14mm f2.8 but always wondered about this lens.

No worries Matt. The big reason I wanted the Canon 16-35mm was because I wanted to be able to use filters with it without needing extra attachments. Having owned a lens similar to the bower 14mm (my Sigma 8-16mm where the front element sticks out of the lens) I was frustrated by not having an easy way to attach filters for normal day time photography. So that's why I went with the Canon lens. Plus I needed a full frame wide angle lens I could use on the 6D. I am also finding now that I am using my longer focal length lenses these days rather than my wide angle lenses and when I use the 16-35mm lens, I most of the time shoot at 35mm. Anyway that's just some additional reasons why I chose that lens. The Bower 14mm is a fantastic wide angle lens for astrophotography though mate. You can't go wrong with that!
