This power point presentation is about 21 remarkable people and the spectacular objects they discovered in the far southern sky.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q9Lcgm5fsRA&feature=youtu.be
you will need to pause some slides.

Attached is a list of arguably the best
20 open clusters
20 globular clusters
20 nebulae
20 planetary nebulae and
30 galaxies
south of declination -20 degrees

SB is surface brightness. L' is length, W' is wide both in arc minutes.

The list is based on this

Thanks for the upload Glen.

I'm looking forward to looking at it over the weekend.

James Dunlop discovered 40
John Herschel found 18
Nicolas LaCaille also found 18
William Herschel found 8 and
Chares Messier discovered 5
of the 110 southern clusters, nebulae and galaxies in the list.

I enjoyed the Power point presentation here Glen.
I am sorry we did not get a chance to observe together at Duckadang, maybe next year.
Cheers:thumbsup:

The faintest objects in the list of 110 southern DSO are:

NGC 1850 an OC in the LMC
NGC 5824 an unusual small GC
The nebulae NGCs 2736, 5367, 6165 and 6334
The PN NGCs 3699, 6337 and IC 5150
And the galaxy IC 5332

The smallest object is the PN NGC 6326.

Glen,
You should also consider Jack Bennett's list.

Ken
The Bennett catalogue contains
3 Neb
9 PN
24 OC
46 Gxy
70 GC
152 Total
I wanted roughly equal numbers of each type of object.

I use a UHC filter for

The nebulae NGCs 2736, 6165 and 6334
The PN NGCs 3699, 6337 and IC 5150

The faintest objects are NGCs 6165 and 6337.

I've massaged the list into a csv file for those of you that might want to open it as a spreadsheet (e.g. in libreoffice) to sort and query it based on surface brightness, object type or whatever.

You will probably need to save it as a csv file first.

Here are images of the 110 Southern DSO plus a few extras.

https://110southerndso.shutterfly.com/pictures/8

Most images are from wikisky.org with a 56' field.
The PN have a 28' field. Some PN images are from the HST.
The SMC image is from Bert. (IIS avandonk)
The file names are usually NGC numbers.
