View Full Version here: : Slight Repro... The Andromeda and Pinwheel Galaxies over Bretti

I have made a slight repro edit to the suggestion H gave, where I have tried to remove that white halo above the trees. The repro is the second image. I think I like the new version better.
Hi all,
Here is a shot I have been working on since returning from my weekend away at Bretti. Seeing Andromeda rise and skim the mountains around the camp site offered a unique opportunity to capture both Andromeda and the Pinwheel galaxies close to a clear horizon away from all the muck of a lower horizon. Credit must be given to Dunk (Camelopardalis) for giving me the idea to try it. This allows you to clearly see their angular size in the sky when compared to the trees.
This is a stack of 6 x 3 minute exposures with a single 3 minute exposure for the foreground. Shot with the Canon 6D and Canon 70-200mm f/4L IS lens at 70mm f/5.6 ISO3200. You can also notice some fog rolling in down the hill. Was a really nice setting and sight to witness.
Higher res shot can be seen here (https://www.flickr.com/photos/59004995@N04/14946667437/).
As always, feedback is greatly appreciated and thanks for looking.
Cheers,
Jason

That looks fantastic Jason.
As the sacrificial lamb that left the day before it cleared, I am really pleased that you have posted such great shots (that I missed witnessing).
Did you see Glend has called for a return visit for the equinox/new moon in three weeks? :poke: (weather permitting)?

That's a really unique composition and a great result!

Thanks guys, I'm glad I captured it as it is something a little different for a nightscape.
Allan, yeah I must thank you for being one of the sacrificial lambs but I am sorry you missed out on the night. And thanks for the heads up about Bretti new moon week, I am keen for a mid week trip up there again.

Beautiful composition mate  rich in detail and colour, Mirach blazing brightly in-between our two neighbouring island universes :) You've captured M110 nicely there too!
My M33 didn't come out very well at all, so I need more nights

Beautiful.
My only suggestion would be to work on the blend so you don't have that annoying halo above the ridge/trees. :)

Thanks Dunk, yeah I really like Mirach blazing in-between the 2 galaxies. Oh really? Well that's such a shame that we're going to have to go back and get more data! haha
Cheers H, thanks for the good suggestion, will give it a go and see what I can come up with.

Great image, perfectly composed. A surprising amount of detail and scale for these galaxies at only 70mm and the foreground is perfectly chosen.

Pretty awesome to see trees in the same shot as Andromeda. Unreal.

Thank you guys, glad you all like the shot. Yeah Russell I always wonder what it would be like if our eyes were sensitive enough to see detail like shown here. It would be incredible but we would probably take it for granted. Graeme, yeah its surprising how much detail you can pick up at 70mm, it just proves how large and close Andromeda is to us. Can't imagine how much larger it will appear in the sky in a few billion years time!

that is a great shot. well done
I really like this image. My hat off to you.
I wish we could see M31 higher over the horizon in Melbourne than we do. Such a shame...
I was thinking the exact same thing when I was looking at this. It would be very cool.

Thanks all, I'm really happy with how this image turned out. I might attempt this again this week but at 200mm this time.
