This one is getting bright quickly. I could line up the main scope with it easily visible in the 8 x 50 finder. In the 100mm refractor with 28mm eyepiece it was very easily visible with some signs of tail. It's so bright it only needed one 2 minute sub. ED100 at F7.2, Pentax K-5.

Nice catch Kevin, well done! Looks like that one is going to be a bit too low down here

Unfortunately is isn't getting any higher. It's downhill from here until it pops out of the western sky - if it survives perihelion.

Heads up for anyone willing to drag themselves out of bed. On the 8th the comet is close to open cluster NGC 2506 and the next morning on the 9th it's in the middle of NGC 2539. Unfortunately for the latter a bright moon will interfere.

I really wish I had the time to get to bed early, wake up early, let the scope cool down, align the scope and then take 40 minutes worth of subs like you Kevin, all before the sun comes up!

Use a refractor, no need for cool down, shoot for a minute or two like in this shot from this morning, that just leaves alignment. ;)

An easy catch using 7X50 binoculars this morning with some careful star hopping. I plan to be out on the 8th and 9th with a telescope as it should be a fine sight with NGC 2506 and then 2539.

Cheers

Steve.

Glad you found it in bnos Steve! I forgot to take a look in binos myself I was so busy photographing it.

Ah i see! i could use my camera with 600mm lens piggy back on mount then, still have to align though :(.

Comet 2013 V5 now has a long thin ion tail.

Pic from this morning.

Did anyone get a clear shot of 2013 V5 and cluster NGC2539 this morning? I barely managed 51 seconds through a cloud sucker hole.

Hey Kevin

Where will it be tomorrow morning? I can take out my binos (11x70) and have a look ;)

Nah, I don't have a good east view until about 40 degrees alt

No luck either in southern Tassie. Clouded out with strong winds.

To the SE of NGC2539 Niv. It's moving very fast now. It will only be in the morning sky for a few more days before it appears in the west after sunset - if it doesn't break up.

From this morning. Full moon was interfering but it's still visible in the finderscope.

Comet C/2013 V5 (Oukaimeden) 2014 0913 1840 - 1900UT. Light pollution and Moon interference. No filter (clear). More details in image. This may be my last from the eastern sky as showers are forecast for tomorrow and it dips too low for me after that.

Thanks AL. Will be looking for this one in the low SW in a week from now, should it survive.

Seriously good work on C/2013 V5 Oukaimeden Kevin!:thumbsup:

Always good to see the evolution of comet.:)

Should make a nice montage.

Cheers,

Justin.

Thanks Justin. There may be a slim chance of it very low in the SE in a few hours... if I'm not asleep.

Kev, Jakub's latest data of today shows a high chance of it breaking up (half expected) .
Such a pity- I couldn't get to observe it as I've been sick. If it survived it was destined to shine around mag 4 and perhaps just visible naked eye.

Great shots, Kev!

Thanks Suzy. Let's hope it survives.

My first attempt since the comet shifted to the evening sky in the west. Somewhat dimmer than I expected. Looks like about magnitude 8. Low altitude and light pollution interfering. 120mm F5 refractor and nifty 50 pics.

That's Great news Kevin that it has survived ! I will look out for this comet tonight ! Is there any tail to be seen visually ?

cometcatcher
27-09-2014, 12:56 PM
Maybe if you have a dark sky Ian. There's too much LP in that direction for me to see anything other than the coma.

Comet C/2013 V5 (Oukaimeden) 2014 0927 0900UT. 120mm F5 refractor, unmodified Pentax K-5 DSLR. In an endeavour to reduce my light pollution in the west I tried an Astronomik CLS filter with some success.

Comet C/2013 V5 (Oukaimeden) 2014 0930 0900UT.
Nice to get a clear run before the comet gets swamped by moonlight. I used a YG filter for this shot.

This evening's pic. I think the tail is getting harder to make out in the Moonlight.

Thanks PacoYepes!

From tonight... Comet C/2013 V5 (Oukaimeden) 2014 1004 0900UT. 78% Moon interference although this combination with the YG filter seems to help subdue moonlight. (Old B+W film trick)
