Finally got around to listing some "portable items" on my home contents insurance tonight, so that if they break/get stolen while i'm out of the house, the insurance still covers them.

I added stuff like my DSLR, telescope + eyepieces, EQ platform, wife's jewellery etc.

Not cheap though, added almost $120 to my yearly premium, about a 40% increase! But I guess it'll be worth it, if I happen to drop my DSLR in the water (like Trevor!).

It covers it if it's travelling in a car with you as well, but not if it's travelling by courier. The item has to be "with you" for it to be covered.

I guess it's like most insurance.. you pay for the piece of mind.. maybe it's a waste of money, but in the event that something is stolen or does get broken/lost, it'll be worth it.

Only 40%. I thought I'd do my mounts, scopes, cameras (I've got a couple :ashamed: (they call me Huffy Jnr)), laptops etc and it more than doubled my house and contents insurance (an additional $600)

my broker got back to me today mike, he is off to the insurance market tomorrow, but he thinks $100 for 30 days in the hands of a courier.

Insurance is worth having I reckon.
I wish I'd insured my camera gear earlier in the year :ashamed:
The damage bill from my little accident would have paid for many years worth of insurance. I've learnt my lesson the hard way.:P

I have certain items "specified" in my home contents policy. In addition to that I have "unspecified" normal household contents covered away from the home to a value of $4,000. This way I have $4,000 cover away from home on "EVERYTHING" that normally lives at home. This includes eyepieces, jewellery, cameras, laptop etc. I figured I wouldnt lose "the lot" in one go so did it this way. I have had this for a few years.

We have "spedified items" in our home contents but outside of home the cost is $30.00 per $1000.00 of value.

Then again accidents only happen at home, don't they? :P :D

I have the same as John an extra $4000 to cover personal affects on top of my full coverage on the house...it only cost me an extra $20 a year to add $20,000 to my house contents policy but the $4000 personal affects was something like $130 a year...well worth the money.

Make sure you read the fine print for personal effects. Some policies I looked at limited the replacement value to $1000 per individual item if lost, stolen or damaged.

Dennis,

That is only if you have not "specified" those items as part of your household contents with a value in excess of $1,000. If you have them specified on your contents policy they are also covered for this value away from the home. I am with AAMI. As others have said it costs an extra $30 per $1,000 of cover and is well worth it IMO for the peace of mind it provides. I suppose it also depends on what value you place on $120.
