Rain is forecast, not ideal conditions but I want to beat the clouds. Also wanted to experiment for a bit of fun. Comet 2012 X1 (LINEAR) near Alnair and galaxies, 2014 0812 0900UT, SW 120mm F5 refractor, 20 x 1 minutes, YG filter, Pentax K-5. About mag 10. Full moon rising being a nuisance.

Bigger at astrobin. http://astrob.in/113004/0/

Nice image! Used it to have a go at seeing the comet visually tonight, but no joy, just too faint with LP and a low Moon. I think the comet's a fair bit fainter than 10 - the galaxy in your image, NGC7213 is mag 10.1, and was a pretty obvious bright ball of fuzz in the 16" scope. The lower brightness (and surface brightness) of the comet just put it out of reach for me tonight. Would put it somewhere below about mag 11.5-12.

But thanks for the image, as it gave me a new observing challenge and I wouldn't have known about C/2012 X1 otherwise

Thanks Andy. 2012 X1 has been visible in the SH since the beginning of the year. It's peak was a couple of months back but it's fading now as it heads away.

Shallow & deep sky all in one basket, admirable capturing Kevin

Thanks Bob. Yeah Astrobin ask if it's deep sky OR solar system. It's both.

Thanks Roger and Niv.

It can be hard to do Roger when the comet is moving fast, but this time X1 is moving slow so just one stack for this shot.
