A sad loss. One of my favourites, too.

Depression is a hard thing to shake. I reckon 99% of the best comedians of the world have it , to some extent. A terrible thing, the black dog.

This is so very sad  He was obviously struggling behind closed doors, a very hard thing to battle, especially in the public eye. A great man has truly been lost.

Absolutely gutted  can't even imagine how his family must feel.

Did anyone else watch (the ratings were low so it got cancelled) his latest venture into TV, The Crazy Ones? Had me rolling around, he was just as brilliant in it as he was in everything else he did.

May your energy and matter be returned to the Universe to inspire us all

It's not often that one person's passing touches so many people around the world. I guess that's a measure of the man he was. He was a uniquely funny comedian (always made me guffaw) and a great actor. Moreover, by all accounts, he was a good man with a gentle soul. Shocked & saddened.

Couldn't say it more eloquently Marcus .. confirms for me once again that the genius that people of his his ilk posses comes at a price

Thanks Jeanette for mentioning this important point in this tragic event.

I wasn't a huge fan of Williams style of standup comedy he was a brilliant actor when matched with particular roles/parts. Good Will Hunting, Dead Poets Society and Good Morning Vietnam were some of his memorable performances.

Tonight I'm rewatching (for the nth time) The World According to Garp. Williams' first foray onto the big screen. One of his very best roles too.

I never thought they'd be able to turn the book into a movie.
The casting was perfection.

Pretty gutted about this, grew up listening to "A Night at the Met", and watching Good Morning Vietnam. So sad that depression can take a great and kind person far too soon.

But he's left behind some wonderful memories, and watching just about any of his shows or films will bring a smile to your face.

Here's just one good one, suitable from a golf-mad Scot: "How the Scots invented golf" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LSXMS8ABAAU

I am at a total loss as to how the universe would take a man so funny and make millions laugh and have such a big heart that he looked after his best friend and yet such a darkness inside of fears and doubt that ultimately took him from us all. Condolences to his wife and children...

NANU NANU OH CAPTAIN MY CAPTAIN!!
