Hi all,

Rod is making the Airfield available to us on Saturday 23rd of August. Many thanks Rod.

One thing is for certain, it will be very cold up there this time around. This winter has been a hard one, and Rod tells me its snowed up there more regularly this year than any other he's been up there. So go prepared, :cold:

If you haven't been to the Airfield before you are most welcome to come. Doesn't matter if you have a scope or not you are welcome. We are a friendly bunch, and don't bite too hard... ;)

Access to the Airfield is via Medlow Bath, the next village after Katoomba heading west. At Medlow Bath's only set of traffic lights turn into Station Pde, and then turn left into Rutland. Rutland is also known as Grand Canyon Drive. The Airfield is 4km from this intersection with the last 3km being unsealed. Being unsealed it can experience erosion that can create nasty ruts in the road surface, so take it easy.

The Airfield is totally BYO power, food, drinks, etc. Loos are available for kids and ladies and those feeling less adventurous (Duncan... ;)). There is no knock-off time as we are welcome to stay overnight. When you've had enough you make your call. There are sofas in the office building we can get some kip in too. The office building also has a combustion heater that becomes the centre of the universe during winter, :campfire:

This is an informal gathering. We all share the cost of a gift to Rod of his preferred brew. The hat gets passed around for this.

These get togethers are a great chance to ask questions if you are new to astronomy. Folks who come up bring a wide variety of instruments and gear, and their interests vary just as widely from visual through to imaging (and even sketching... :D). The Airfield's elevation at 1000m also makes it not only one of the highest observing sites close to Sydney, but also its elevation makes a big impact in reducing the influence of Sydney's light pollution.

Heading to the Airfield

Note that some natsav systems call this site "Katoomba Airport", and won't show Katoomba Airfield.

On entering the Airfield's gates, keep to the left hand track - there is no access to the observing field using the other two tracks. Drive past the "no entry" sign and turn right up the hill past the various buildings. The setup slab is on the left once you reach the main runway.

The first pic below shows the route to the Airfield coming from Katoomba. The second pic shows the way to the observing slab on the main runway.

If you have a telescope, bring it along! If all you have are binoculars, brilliant! Bring them! Binos are a fantastic astronomy tool. I always bring my pair. If you don't have a scope, no problem either, we like to share the views through ours.

Mental.

Will be good to catch up with all of you!

On a side note, it has rained very little up in the 'Mountains these last few months. Things are very dry up there as far as fire fuel is concerned. Rod's mentioned that there are a few worried minds pondering the coming fire season. Last fire at the Airfield happened in 2002, & there is a lot of fuel around. Going to need a lot of rain to calm things down. Last summer saw the Airfield run ragged with so many choppers around. Hey, one night we had our astro session we shared the runway with on of the 'Elvis' water bombers! Didn't some of you get some brilliant video of the chopper dumping water on to the runway?

According to the forecast, we'll see plenty of chances for rain in the next week, so long as it fishes off for Saturday night ;)

So. How's it looking for tonight?

mental4astro

<sigh>

Not happening again... :(

Big fat high pressure system sitting in the Tasman Sea that is no hurry to go anywhere so there are moisture laiden easterly winds for another few days to come. Any winds from the east and we are stuffed as the moisture condenses into cloud climbing up over the ranges. We want wind to come from the west for our best chances.

Oh, well, here's to next month for another try.

Hey, look on the bright side - gives us another chance to wax the shiny tubes of our scopes again, clean the eyepieces under a microscope, test the electronics with a multimeter, all manner of fun stuff, :D

:screwy: I think I might be loosing it...

Camelopardalis

Waaaaaaayyyyy too late to lose it now, mate ;)

Anyone up for Hargraves or Mt Blackheath? I'll wait and see what our Skippy friend says after 10am...but my plans are liquid ;)

Now we're talking!

Sunday night looks worth a try, reasonable seeing, low winds, and no clouds. Not sure how to read the wind direction on SkippySky though, wind seems to be emanating from the Western Blue Mountains and going in all directions :)

Cheers
Steffen.

OK Sunday Night it is. BH lookout. Shall we meet at BH hotel for lunch?

Wavytone

Ok desperadoes...

Just crossed the coat hanger - it's a really solid cloud deck out west past the mountains.

Sunday could be a bit optimistic, even if it clears during the day with all the water lying around my guess is fog will and low cloud will form as the air cools to the dewpoint.

The pub BTW is the Ivanhoe, alternatively the Victoria antique fair has a cafe, good for lunch.

I'm grounded for a few months.

We have never had fog issues at hargraves or Blackheath. The valley below likes to fog over but never for us. We have been to BH Lookout about 3 times this year and Once to Hargraves and fog has not been a problem.

We also enjoy having lunch at Blackheath hotel.

I can't get a straight weather report for good weather tonight. I think we have to let this one go too.

AG Hybrid
24-08-2014, 10:29 AM
Then again. The weather is lovely at the moment. 7 timer is saying a tiny bit of cloud at 22:00. Thoughts guys? We could maybe go Hargraves instead of BH lookout?

Camelopardalis
24-08-2014, 11:18 AM
I'm up for chancing it. Either works for me, although Mt BH has the appeal of no heavy lifting :D

AG Hybrid

7timer says it will be clear for our evening. I think its a go. Head to BH lookout then.

I'll meet you guys there at about 5PM then.

OK cool, I'll be aiming to leave by 2:30.

So we don't meet at Blackheath Hotel then?

Cheers
Steffen.

Ok, after weighing my options and considering both SkippySky and Apanel forecasts (which for once agree) I've decided to set up at home. If I read the two forecasts correctly it's supposed to be clear and transparent here, whereas both predict a cloud or mass of haze hanging over the western mountains.

See you guys next month

Cheers
Steffen.

k.

Skippysky says there is some haze in the area at around 9 PM but approaching midnight its completely clear. I think the dark skies of the mountains will make up for any transparency issues early on.

Im thinking of heading up to BH on thursday night if anyone else is inerested
