Hello all,

Just wanted to say if your thinking that winter can't get much worse and your sick of cold cloudy nights then do yourself a favour and travel to our top end.

I recently travelled up the coast to Karratha by motorbike. My overnight stop found me halfway between Carnarvon and Manilya in a roadside park. After pitching my tent my eyes ventured to the stars and I was rewarded with the best night I have ever seen. No need for a telescope it was that fantastic.

On my RNR I travelled to Millstream National Park where camping again on the roadside at the edge of a beautiful valley the skies where again alive. Not quite as good as Manilya as the the moon was in the first quarter but still fantastic to fall asleep while look at it through the fly netting of my tents roof.

Weather is fantastic if only a little cold at night and hardly a cloud insite. Not long now before the heat returns but still enough time for a quick venture to satisfy your soul. So get up there while you can

Simmo ;)

Oh yes, the Pilbara is great place. Brilliant scenery. I'd love to get back there one day but it isn't possible in a 4 week annual holiday. Even if I take long service I doubt I'd make it all the way across to there. It will probably have to be the post-retirement trip. I hope to approach the area from the east, having seen rather a lot of sand and 'spinifex' (it's actually Triodia spp.) on the way.

You're right about the time of year. I spent 7 month in Pt Headland and then spent xmas in Karijini NP. Of course it was clear but the heat does churn up the atmosphere.

Fortunately one doesn't have to travel that far in Oz to get brilliant skies.
