Mine would be Alpha Centauri... I've had a fascination with it ever since the Robinson family set out for it 40 years ago!

Like a lot here, I'd have to go for Alpha Centauri for a number of reasons:

It's the closest, ain't none closer (except the Sun, which most people don't think of when you ask what is the closest star).

It is really easy to find, most people with the slightest knowledge know where it is.

The Jupiter 2 would have been there by now if it wasn't for Zac (indeed!).

Most people are fascinated when they see it close up, they never realised it was a double (I have thought about saying that the other dot is the Jupiter 2, but that would be mean).

It is on our flag...others as well.

Finally, because it is "ours"...most of the population (in the north) can't see it. In fact they can't see a lot of the cool stuff like both Clouds, Omega, Eta Car...the list goes on!

My favorite is the blood red carbon star next to Mimosa in Crux..catalogued Esg365 about mag 7-8....it might make a pretty diamond one day!!

circumpolar
14-08-2006, 08:19 PM
1) Alpha Centauri
2) Canopus
3) Acrux

Funny how they are all circumpolar:P , Well.... Canopus is boarderline.
Lots of people voting for Sirus over Canopus though. Poor old Canopus, almost just as bright. We really are lucky in the south.
Acrux is a good wide double that always gets a look-in at my place.
