View Full Version here: : Veil nebula mosaic in Ha

A 30 megapixel mosaic of the Veil taken with the gear I'm sharing at SRO in California (currently a Takahashi FSQ-106ED with QSI683 camera). OIII and maybe SII still to come...

This was a 4 pane mosaic with about 10 hours of 30 minute subs for each pane. My first serious attempt at a mosaic and it's not quite perfect. Processing done in PixInsight.

(Very) high res version available at Astrobin: http://www.astrobin.com/109331/0/

Cheers,
Rick.

Rick,
That is a beauty in pure state of the of art. I love the very fine structures you caught in the nebula.

Thanks for sharing,

Fernando

That's nice detail at full resolution. Very nice detail.

Thanks Ted, Fernando & H0ughy! My consolation prize for not going to Astrofest (busy at work, forecast for the days I booked looked terrible... looks like I would have had two good nights out of four.)

Thanks, Paul! Didn't turn out too bad so far despite the mosaic overlap being a little dodgy.

Not epic enough. Needs more epic. Not.

Great work Rick. I love widefield mosaics. They can be tricky but you are off to a great start. The 683/FSQ seems well matched.

Looks great, Rick. I think you should add the OIII and combine using HOO. I didn't like my version with SHO, the colors just looked odd to me.

In the full res I could not see the overlap. Just some back ground noise but the detail is what struck me the most.

The high res is awesome.

Looking very good Rick!

I hope everyone is viewing the actual full res and not just the "Fit to window" image on Astrobin. (click on "view" in the top right hand corner and select "Full resolution"). Big file but certainly worth the wait.

Fantastic!

Thanks, Troy. OIII will help as teal is more epic than red (for the same reason that Dmin is the saddest of keys).

Ta, Greg. I'd prefer a camera with a bigger sensor and bigger pixels but the 683 is working pretty well.

Thanks, John. A bi-colour Ha/OIII is the obvious next step. I'll still have a go with some SII if I can get the data. I'm getting better at colour tweaking in PixInsight and I can usually manage to come up with colours I like starting with SHO.

Very kind of you, Paul. There are a couple of spots where the mosaic is a little funky because I have included the noisy edge of a panel but nothing too obvious.

Thanks Marc!

And thanks, Rod!

Magnificent Rick!!:thumbsup::thumbsup:

What a joy cruising around this image.

They should call it the dragon's breath.

Cheers,

Justin.

Yeah, looks like some warping issues here and there but sheesh, much better than any mozaic I have ever done :P This area looks great in Ha B&W too

Good effort indeed.

That's excellent Rick. The full res looks amazing. It's very fine with so many structures and filaments. The fainter parts remind me of a dense fluid falling though water or something.

Look forward to the colour!

Thanks, Marco!

Thanks, Justin. It's a fantastic object. So much stuff going on.

Thanks, Mikey! I think I'll generate a synthetic star field and register against that for the next version with Ha and OIII. Eventually I'll get it right

Thanks, Erik. The OIII data is starting to come in but it will take a while to get another 40 hours with the short summer nights in the northern hemi. I'm certainly looking forward to it!

Had another look. That looks great Rick. Nicely stitched.:thumbsup::thumbsup:
What's the overlap like between panels?

RickS

Thanks, JJJ! Welcome back from AF :)

Ta, Marc. We are still having some problems with the rotator so some of the panels are slightly tilted. As a result, the overlap varies. At worst there is almost none. At best it is probably around 20%.

Cheers,
Rick.

Love this Rick. Really shows off the entire area.

Sorry you didn't get up to AF, but the first half the week was probably best. Good to see you're keeping busy!

Yeah, thats epic all right, cant remember seeing this before, wow. Is it a bit compressed?. That might be wrong.

RickS
28-07-2014, 07:15 PM
Thanks, Rob. If the clouds clear at SRO I might even get another couple of panels at the bottom so the little "tail" isn't chopped off!

I was disappointed to miss my few days at AF but I guess there's always next year.

Hope you brought back some great data and we'll see some images soon

Cheers,
Rick.

I did a little dynamic range compression to bring up the dimmer stuff without blowing out the highlights, Fred, but I didn't think I was too heavy handed. I could be wrong, of course :)

Cheers,
Rick.
