Which program would you recommend to create a photo mosaic? My main question is - do the tiles have to match perfectly or do such programs automatically recognize overlapping parts? The reason why I am asking is that I would like to stitch together moon photos taken with my webcam... :)
Thanks!

Microsoft ICE is free and seems to work well. And yes, it does seem to work out what goes where. Clever stuff.

Windows live photo gallery - which you would probably already have on your computer does a good job automatically. i've used it for a few stitches (moon and nebs) and it came out well.

an irregular example - the program can pick overlapping parts!

Hugin is free. I use it natively in Linux, but it's available for Windows and Mac as well. And, yes, the software uses "alignment points" common to adjoining frames to work out how to overlap them.

This was made with Hugin: La Lune (www.iceinspace.com.au/forum/showthread.php?t=118519)
