I usually don't watch much TV or go to the movies... But also due to the cold weather (:() I was thinking it might be a good idea to watch a good/exciting space movie. Is there anything you would recommend that can be bought online?
(PS: Not ET :))
Thanks!

They are not exciting but I love hubble type fly byes of gallaxies neb etc...it seems slow but you are travelling past gallaxies in half a minute ..preety fast for say 150000 light years.. And there is spacey music no narration and they inject a 3d effect a bit phony but if you just sit there and take it in it is real cool. I must say that if one were to take the excellent images presented in our own deep sky photo section one could achieve similar such is the quality our members regularly present here. Keep an eye open when in K Mart I got a five in one all space stuff and for the money a great night..I dont think I got thru them all but only 15 bucks and the movies were good..
One a star ship goes to the sun cant remeber name but it was trippy. Best wishes alex

The Cosmos series by Carl Sagan. It's not a movie, it's a series. An oldie but a goodie.

Moon, Contact, 2001, The Dish, Apollo 13, Cosmos (both the original and the current series).

Slightly off topic but I've just discovered one of my favourite space docos called "Nukes in Space: The Rainbow Bombs" is on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_AJPpHnBJiY
It has some amazing footage from some very early rocket launches. Might be worth bookmarking for a cloudy night if you're into that sort of thing :)

I thoroughly enjoyed October Sky when it was released, great true story. I'm sure it has the typical Hollywood embellishments to spice it up for the big screen, but probably mostly factual anyway.

The opening sequence was worth the price of the ticket (to see it at the cinema) alone. :)

My picks:

Forbidden Planet - I cannot believe no one else picked it. My opinion, the best Sci-Fi flick ever made. BRILLIANT adaption from Shakespeare's The Tempest, and beautiful SFX for the day. A wonderful, enigmatic film. 10/10

Prometheus - stop and think about it. Also, look for ALL the clues and hints shown - nothing is explicitly stated in this movie. The sharp eyed watcher will understand this film a LOT more - typical Ridley Scott movie - he does not hand it on a plate to you, he makes you think

Alien - Director's Cut. Fills in a few blanks that were removed in the original. Gripping, suspenseful, dark, and full of H.R Geiger's masterpiece design.

Sunshine - it's quirky, it's different, and it's relatively unheard of, but it is interesting at least.

Alien ³ - DIRECTOR'S CUT - has to be the DC, as the regular box office version sucks rocks. Again, the DC fills in some blanks, changes some premises and ideas; for instance, in the DC, the xenomorph is the product of a cow, whereas the theatre version it came from a dog. I like the filthy, distasteful feel of this movie. NOTE: I am a MAJOR Alien franchise fan, but do NOT like Aliens (typical American bravado and BS fare), nor the French abomination Alien Resurrection. And absolutely NOT the Alien vs Predator series - how dare they! :)

Carl Sagan's Cosmos may now be dated, but it walked all over De Grasse Tyson's political agenda filled nothingness, that presented essentially - NOTHING! Just when I thought he would start talking about interesting points, that section ends. HUH? And where was really any discussion of the cosmos in it? BIG thumbs down.

Russian Sci-Fi classic Solaris. Psychological, intense, superbly produced. SBS did a translated version, and I think there are other versions available (I watch it in Russian :D)

H G Wells The Day the Earth Stood Still - still intense to this day.

War of the Worlds - the original, not the Tom Cruise yakness.

When Worlds Collide - I will always remember the end scene.

Anyway, there ya go, opinion and all :)

I liked the majority of Gravity, they just stuck in one glaring "plot device" that I could just not come at after all that good work.

Enders game, watched that recently after reading and re reading the book more times than I care to admit (The whole series of books actually) Very enjoyable but I think you need to read the book first, there is so much stuff glossed over due to time restrictions that I had to keep on explaining things to my wife as we went along! Perhaps it stands up better from that perspective if you have never read the book and just take what is presented and I am just being harsh.

Contact, yes, that opening sequence, looses a bit of impact on the small screen but still great (And ripped off by the Simpsons!)

I am 43 and I only watched Blade Runner last year (How did that happen?) worth a watch.

On the plus side, I have still NEVER seen ET.

Wow there's a lot of great movies listed here, but I've got to agree with Forbidden Planet, closely followed by 2001, Enemy Mine I think was based on a book by Issac Osimov, anyone able to shed any light on that?

Another vote for Silent Running. This movie is in mono (at least my DVD I bought is). Wonderful movie with good story and detailed sets.

2001:A Space Odyssey. A classic with beautiful cinematography and soundtrack from the genius minds of Clarke and Kubrick. I saw it at the Opera House with live orchestra on stage playing the soundtrack during the movie. Wonderful!

Logan's Run (the movie). I did enjoy the TV series as a child but later saw the original movie and preferred it.

Westworld and Futureworld if only because Yul Brynner is in it.

The Omega Man (original) and I Am Legend (remake).

As for documentaries:

Cosmos. A classic and well worth watching if only to hear Carl Sagan say "Billions"

Any http://www.spacecraftfilms.com production. Absolutely first class historical footage.

From the Earth to the Moon. A fantastic dramatisation of the Apollo program produced by HBO. This is one of my favourites. Each mission is a separate episode as are other key events in the Apollo program.

The Right Stuff. Great movie and amazing how the actors look so much like the actual astronauts of the Mercury program. Nicely filmed.

Capricorn One. (How to fake a Mars mission). Good cast and storyline.

Blade Runner. Epic movie.
The book by Philip K. Dick that the movie is based on is worth a read. It is an afternoons worth; not big. The movie uses the theme and veers a fair bit from the book. However the book has the better title: Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep.
