I'm about to upgrade to a "real" telescope , a C8 or better still the C9.25. But I'm worried that the bigger OTA is going to be too heavy to move around. I have to move next door to a park to do any observing and I am sure the C8 would be mangageable, but ????? the 9.25.
Any suggestions appreciated....

What mount are you going to put it on?

The C925 is still manageable by a single person, but I guess it depends on how strong/fit you are.

In other words, a normal man would be fine. An elderly man or smaller woman would have problem with any telescope.

I guess you might say I'm getting on, and I don't really want to struggle and drop the thing. Still struggling with the aperture thing though. (Bigger is better.)It will be going on a CG 5GT mount. My wife is always available to help as well.

The 9.25 ota weighs about 20 pounds. You could carry around 20 pounds of weight for a few minutes to get an idea of the portability.

If it worries you too much get a trolley like they use to move filing cabinets and a few shock cords.

its not bad- i lift the 9.25 and ASGT at one time- its only a 20lb OTA,but carrying it out separately is much easier- i dont do this cause what bothers me is making sure the dovetail is seated correctly in the mount

My C9.25 is quite manageable. Every night that I set up, I lift it approx 1.5m to slide the dovetail into the mount, but this takes some care to ensure you engage the dovetail correctly. I usually do this naked - that is, no accessories fitted on the OTA to keep the weight to a minimum.

I have fitted a handle to the top of the OTA making it easy to carry out doors each night.

I am 51, 5ft 9¼ ins but I work out in a gym 3 times a week so have above average strength.

Hope that helps.

Mine sits on an EQ5 (& tripod) I manage to carry it fully setup, but I do take one counter weight off. I only have to go 15m.

Dennis - the mental imagery is disturbing.

I carry my 9.25 out and back all the time. It's really quite manageable in terms of weight. A little awkward in terms on size, but has never given me any trouble.. don't usually give it a moments thought. Suspect if you can handle the C8 the 9.25 really isn't that much bigger. The handle on the OTA is a little awkward and might be improved upon by someone with a little ingenuity:)

Many thanks for passing on your thoughts. I did what was suggested and weighed out 20 lbs of rocks and it wasn't too bad to lug around. After much to and froing I have settled on the C8 and ordered same today. I have a 10 inch dob so instead of selling it I shall keep it for my bigger mirror. Now everything has been ordered up into the back shed (by she who matters) so I have to make a dust proof cupboard. At least I won't have the cool down problems so much. Spare cash can go into better EPs a voltage regulator and deep cycle battery.
