View Full Version here: : Spotty sunrise over Brisbane!

Hi all,
After taking some sunspot images yesterday afternoon, I was thinking that it would be nice to try and capture the spotty Sun at sunrise, and then I thought it would be even better if that sunrise was behind the city buildings... So after a bit of time studying Stellarium and looking at maps, and then a quick reconnaissance drive yesterday evening looking at possible locations, I settled on Green Hill Reservoir as a suitable location.
I got up there just as dawn started this morning, and took some panoramas of the city. Then, with the camera still in position on the tripod, I added a Baader solar filter and captured the rising sun with exposures every 3.5 minutes.
I managed to pick the location perfectly (with the Sun rising right in the middle of the city!), and the weather cooperated beautifully, so I'm pretty happy with the result! :)
Thanks for looking!
Cheers,
Stephen

great shots - like the way the filter allows the skyline ;)

Very cool Stephen. It's weird to see a filtered Sun and city lights all together but I think it works in this case. Obviously a similar thing with the Moon would look more natural but these days you have to do something to stand out from the crowd. Well done.

Thanks Derek! I got lucky choosing my position I think!
Thanks Roger! I though it would be an interesting shot in my head, so it was nice to be able to make it happen as I intended.
Yes, it's a new type of solar film that also lets through all artificial lighting, designed specifically for this sort of shot!
Actually, I've attached a stacked image of the filtered shots, showing that it was easy to align these with the earlier panorama, (especially with this image which was taken just before adding the filter (https://www.flickr.com/photos/stephenmudge/14416836109/)as a guide)
Thanks Greg! I know it is an "impossible" image, but like you said, you have to do something to stand out from the crowd! I will try and get a Moonrise image from the same location one of these days...
Yes, it's nice to be featured on Spaceweather again. Thanks Morton.
Thanks Andrew!

Stephen
