Now that I have camera number 3 I am ever more curious what other DSLR cameras are like, or compare to the ones I have.
If I could be so bold to ask a big favour to those with various DSLR cameras to do a comparison for me by posting pics of your amp glow? To keep things equal I need a 10 minute dark frame at ISO 1600 at 22C or close to it. No pre processing other than to convert to jpeg. The reason I need these settings is to show the noise without stretching.
Here's mine. The old Nikon D70s is pretty bad. Even at 1 minute it glows and is noisy. The Pentax K-x is much better and more evenly distributed. The Pentax K-5 glows brighter than the K-x at the bottom right but less at the top left.
I'd really like to see what an 1100D looks like if any 1100 D owners can oblige.

One good turn deserves another.
1 dark frame, 1100D, 10 mins, 1600 ISO, approx. 21.5 Degrees ambient.

As you asked so nicely :)
1 x Dark @1600 ISO, 600 seconds with a Canon 60Da.
1 x unstretched and one x stretched to the max..
Cheers

Thanks John, that's even quieter! What was the ambient air temperature?

Around 18.5c I believe, inside the house.

This is a good thread, quite interesting to see all the results.
pouring with rain right now, nice and cozy in my 21c house, so I'm baking a sub for you right now!

Ok here are my 2 examples.
The first horrid one is ISO1600 unstretched, the second better one is 400. Hmm, I might try 400 in my shots...
it'd be nice to see some of the $10,000 CCD guys post similar examples. And a Canon 5D mk 3, and a few Nikons.

Ha, here are my best 3 astrophotos I've ever taken
Canon EOS 5D Mk I I I
1600, 800 and 400. Very pleased! I gotta start using this baby!
The original pics appear better than here, as usual. Much less noise pattern.

Wow my cam is way noisier than that
This is just a 10 minute exposure at ISO1600 with any lens on (and the lens cap ) ?

Yep, in fact my 40d shots were with no lens , just the bayonet cover on.

This is my miserable attempt... Canon 1100D at ~21.5C ISO1600 600s with all noise-reduction functions disabled.
When I look at the actual raw image in Canon tools, the coloured pixels are more saturated.

FLI Proline 16803 1x1 binning -30C 600 second master dark, I boosted it in Photoshop like I normally would do to a light exposure. The jpeg is a bit small, there are some hot pixels in there but its also pretty clean.

That's more like it! I can't see much right now on my mobile phone, but it looks like you forgot to turn the camera on! :-)
Can u post the unstretched version, so we can all have a cry?
This is proving to be a great testing resource.

Hi
Here are some darks from a Canon 6D. No stretching or noise reduction.
Starting with ISO1600 on left through 800 and then ISO400 on right. Temperature about 20C.

very good results. Now, if only someone with an SBIG 8300 cam chimed in...

Whilst it is not 600 seconds, here is a Dark of 30 minutes @ -20c with a Moravian G2-8300.

Thanks for all the responses! Very informative. Out of the non cooled cameras, looks like the newer models are getting better with noise.

Well thanks for starting the thread!
If anything, it makes a compelling case for CCDs. By the time you pay for one of the latest SLRs and modding, a little bit more and you're in dark Ccd territory
