View Full Version here: : Is this M20 better?

Reprocessed, and hopefully improved by making it
less garish. Still can't get any imaging done.

Very nice image, but I reckon you can get away with a bit more saturation than that. The older film based images can sometimes provide something to aim for if you want it to look "real", eg from 1990: http://ftp.aao.gov.au/images/captions/aat012.html
but of course, it is still a personal choice.

Thanks Ray, I've managed to stop the stars looking like golden flecks,
like they did in my earlier version, but at the cost of less saturation. I'll see if I can increase the saturation a bit without making the stars look like Christmas tinsel. David Malin's images were superb weren't they.

That's good! You could do with some flats to correct what looks like vignetting. Otherwise it's really pretty and you've got plenty of data.

Thanks Cam; I'll have to have a close look; I haven't noticed any
vignetting in the past. I have added another pic with increased saturation, as Ray suggested.

Oh yeah the second one rocks! Your processing has come along wonderfully Raymo.

Thanks Bruce, It's just basic stuff in DSS. Just downsized for IIS in PS.

They look great small, what do they look like bigger Ray? Do you have an Astrobin page to upload bigger ones to?

Hi Kevin, My lack of tech savvy rears it's ugly head again. I have no idea
how to utilise Astrobin. I haven't felt the need to display my second rate
efforts on some fancy website, like I'm David Malin, or something. I
haven't tried blowing up the high res version, so I have no idea how it looks when enlarged. My knowledge of comps is almost zero; I don't even know how to create a file or folder, or open a zipped up one, for instance.
I don't even know where to find the task manager that my daughter told me about.

Hi Ray, just go here http://www.astrobin.com/ and register. Just play with a few buttons and see what happens. That's what I do anyway. ;)
Task manager, just move mouse cursor over the task bar and right click. You should see task manager there then.

Thanks Rusty, it's a shame the weather won't let me get any new material.
Thanks Kevin, I'll have a go at Astrobin. Thanks for Task Manager,
although I don't know what I need it for. I'll have to have a look at it
and see what it does.

raymo

It's a reprocessed version of the one I posted a couple of weeks ago.
14 subs; a mix of 30- 60 secs. A mix of 1600 & 3200 ISO, Canon 1100D,
non modded. Thanks for looking Niv.

I do like the second one, only slightly more than first. No need to saturate more I reckon.
yes the picture hosting sites do your pictures much better justice, try them. And don't undersell your pics, they're looking lovely. Even nicer at higher rez!
Yes our melbourne weather, in winter, is getting frustrating, I too am just practising processing and tweaks when I get bored under cloudy skies.
But last night was ridiculous. Quite a clear night, so I set up all the equipment. Just as I was about to turn on the mount, thick huge clouds came in. Waited a few mins. Bugger, decided to pack it all up.
literally,as each piece came inside, the clouds got lighter! By the time everything was in, it was crystal clear.argghhh!!!
That's a nice M20, raymo... you had better luck capturing the blue than I.
I recommend getting involved with Astrobin -- the fact that you made the effort to go out there and capture the target is proof enough that your images are not second rate. Astrobin is not an elitist community...any and all image contributions are important, regardless of perceived quality. Plus, it has a nifty feature which allows you to publish in-line any revisions you might make to the original image, due to better post processing, more data etc.

Geez Raymo, you oft bang on about how your too old to learn anything, everythings too hard and expensive, just cant understand a thing. Thats a very good image, youve progressed well. Stop that tedious self-depriviation, it s daft and not appropriate.

I'm truly sorry that I Have irritated you Fred. What I have been saying
may be tedious,[for which I apologise again], but is actually accurate.
I use JPEGs because I struggle with raws. I have no idea how to do any processing other than the basic DSS stuff. I don't guide because I don't
have the gear to do it, and manual guiding is a pain in the neck. I
probably get self obsessed, being home all day, unable to do much outside, because of the dismal weather here at this time of year; and
in fairness to me, some of my remarks have been answers to other peoples' questions. Anyway, you won't hear any more of it, [after this next bit ]. To illustrate my tech savvy, I have no idea how to attach a pic to an email, or send a text on a mobile phone. [I don't have one].
Thanks Eden and Simmo, I'll look into Astrobin. Simmo, the same thing
happened to me two nights ago, all set up and nicely aligned, and then
100% socked in, but didn't clear in my case.
cheers everyone

Kevin, Eden and Simmo, It seems that Astrobin is for raw only. As I only use
JPEG, it would seem that I can't use it.

Ray, all my Astrobin uploads have been jpeg. There might be a dialog box filter you need to select "all files *.*" or something like that. It definitely takes jpeg.
Do you see this screen? Choose upload a finished image or work in progress. Don't worry about the RAW box below.
