How close should spur gears be to both avoid erratic tracking due to imperfections in the gears binding each other and minimise backlash due to a sloppy intermesh?
I have read the old axiom of cigarette paper thickness between the gears, but looking at hyper-tuned mounts, it seems the gap is almost imperceptible.
I adjusted a Vixen mount a while back to good results in RA but slightly less perfect in Dec (such that occasionally, MaxIM would refuse to guide because of poor Dec response during calibration, but perfect RA response - it could be a balance issue moreso, since the Vixen heads are notoriously tight and odd to balance exactly). Interestingly, PHD NEVER had an issue in either RA or Dec with the same mount and 20 minute subs were easily accomplished with tight circular stars - go figure!
Appreciate any ideas. It's an HEQ5 mount I am working on for a friend, as it has quite bad backlash, and very poor motor stop after a slew - it goes WELL past target before settling - you can watch the drift in the EP. The spur gears are already polished and the worms cleaned and regreased with lithium and graphite grease - now to perfect the intermesh.
