My lovely wife bought me a book she thought I'd like. 'The Martian' by Andy Weir.
It's supposedly the log and story of a member of a six person Mars Exploratory Team who gets left behind in an emergency departure. The technical aspects of his actions and outcomes were vetted by a number of space specialists and it's portrayed as being a very realistic scenario.
It's a rather sobering read for any who have volunteered for the Mars expedition. It's also been bought up for a movie in the near future.
Other than saying it's fast paced, quite action filled and I had difficulty putting it down I won't give any more story details but it was a damn good read.

If you see it anywhere ( Liz got it via Amazon I think ) I'd thoroughly recommend it.

Thanks for the heads-up. I've added it to my (quite long) "to read" list.

On your recommendation I ordered this from Dymocks.
It is SO GOOD I finished it and have started reading it all over again. Now one of my fave books of all time.
A fantastic read full of geeky goodness!
Thanks for the initial review :thumbsup::thumbsup:

Hi Brent,
mine arrived from the Book Depository today. It's a full moon night and forecasts are little above zero for this area, so it looks like a good night for a good book.
Thanks for the heads-up +1.

Indeed, it's getting down to 4 degrees at the coast. Definitely a night to stay in. :cold:

Thanks for the book review - it's on my "buy" list.

One of the better books I have read in a LONG time - witty, swift, imaginative. Written just like I would expect a log of a survivor to be written.

I read 7 chapters in a bit over an hour the first night :)

You'll be pleased to learn that Ridley Scott is set to direct Matt Damon in a movie based on the book.

Glad you didn't give too much detail. This is next to listen to in my Audible list.

I have just finished Hard Duty - Mark Cooper, good, Divergent - Veronica Roth, excellent, Dune - Frank Herbert, superb, Terms of Enlistment - Marko Kloos, excellent, the Jumper series, Enders Game series and more. Audio books are brilliant. My eyesight has been damaged by years of massive doses of narcotic pain relief and it hurts now after reading for a while, even with my new glasses, so I listen while walking, cycling, relaxing in the spa after exercise or driving on long trips. The ones that use multiple performers add an extra dimension.

Can't wait to start the Martian now :D

Glad you all seem to have liked it guys. I'm looking forward to the film myself, good choices for both the director and main character. If they get the realism view factor up where 'Gravity' was then it's going to be some eyecandy.
