View Full Version here: : IC2944 Bi Colour total reprocess

While waiting for the clouds to part again, I thought I would process the OIII and Ha data I had so far into a bi colour image. Not sure about how it looks as the OIII did not seem to have much impact but still worth showing the development so far.

This is about 20 hours of data so far.

Click here (http://paulhaese.net/IC2944BiColour.html)for higher resolution image.

Edit I have done a reprocess of this data. David's comments prompted me to take another look at this and I am quite happy with this now. What do others think?

It's impressive Paul and quite dramatic, thanks to the choice of colours.

Thats an amazing part of the sky. Really loving what you doing there.

Thanks guys.

I like the detail of this data but the elongated stars at the top due to tilt and mis-collimation is annoying. Now that I have the flattener and the adapters should be on the way today I can start to think about sorting that problem out in the near future.

Looks really good Paul; some nice detail in there! .. and more improvements to come with the flattener on its way.
One question, if this is a bicolour image only (Ha -> red and OIII -> blue?) how come your star cores appear white (neutral)? Have you used the Ha/OIII as luminance or something else?

coming along well Paul - would be nice to get some clear sky eh?

No I did not use the Ha/OIII combine as luminance and wondered the same things myself. I like you was puzzled about the star colours. However, a previous image (Helix) done in bi colour had the same effect on the stars. The only thing I think that might explain this is that I have use the Ha/OIII combine as the green and that would produce a white star perhaps.

Yes clear skies have been rare this year so far. Although there is some word that another drought is approaching with the el nino conditions in the pacific, so that might mean clear skies again next year. I think I remember 2007 being this cloudy before the drought started in ernest.

I have just done a total reprocess of this data. I think this works better now. Comments?

Hey Paul the high res version is brilliant, and all done remotely
The mind boggles!

That's really nice Paul!

Love the contrast and depth. Looking good!

Looks good Paul; the nebula is now a bit brighter / yellower which appears to have created better contrasts with the darker and orange/brown areas

looking great paul, the curvature can be eliminated in PS with the lens correction filter, under the custom tab, remove distortion -12 worked pretty well for me!

Very nice, Paul! The colouring works well.

Cheers,

Excellent Paul, impressive. Lacking a bit of red, I know its bicolour, but are you going to add some SII?.

Thanks guys for the comments, I really appreciate everyone taking the time to make a comment.

Yep set up and go to bed at a normal hour, in the mean time the system works away gathering data. That is how it should be for everyone.

Well I have done just that and learnt a new trick today. Thanks Pete. I used a lesser setting but it worked.

Thanks Fred. Yes I am planning on picking up some SII as soon as the skies clear for me. I need about 7-10 hours and that will give me enough data then to do another rendition. Did you find the OIII on this object was a bit thin?

Bassnut
12-06-2014, 06:54 PM
Yes, I know what you mean, OIII subs were a bit ill defined and washy, but enough data allowed a bit of tightening.

Paul Haese
12-06-2014, 07:04 PM
Are you running 3nm OIII Fred? How much OIII did you collect? Mine looks thinner than that.

Bassnut
12-06-2014, 07:09 PM
Yes, 3nm . 19 subs bin 2 40min ea total 12 hrs odd. Thats on a 10" f8 though.

Paul Haese
12-06-2014, 07:16 PM
Ah the binning that is it. Mine are 1x1 30 minutes in the 12 f8.

Not a fan of this colour palette but narrowband is anyones colour. Sometimes the gold palette looks good. The usual reds/blues/mustards is hard to beat ala Martin.

Paul Haese

Yes but that is using SII in his image Greg. This is bi colour.

gregbradley

Which formula did you use for Bicolour? I usually use Ha as red + (O111+Ha)/2 as green + O111 blue. If you have RGB stars that is handy as well. Martin uses the colour channel tool to switch 2 channels to get rid of the purple stars.

Gives a nice balance even without S11 (which often is weak and does not add much anyway).

Yep did that but got a lovely greeny yellow base image. I don't have enough OIII data though at present, nor do I have RGB stars, though this can be simulated as Martin does (had the same conversation with him about doing that).

Once I have some more data and the SII I will be finalising this data. I don't mind the colour and as you point out it is dealers choice. Just personal preference and certainly better than green base. ;)

Amaizing, yeah I say that a lot - only because I dont really know what else to say, way over my head - Mighty striking image tho - them colours are real coool, and clarity is just way great - totally nice work Paul.

Make a good arty print for a modern rustic Freedom furniture store display :P

Detail is rather nice

Awesome palette. Very sharp. The time spent on capture certainly shows up in the darker fronts on the edges of the field.

Thanks guys for the comments.

Colour not to your liking? ;) That's ok not everyone will like it. It is probably too monochromatic and not showing the colours it should. There should be RGB stars showing and the colours in the combined version look weird. Maybe I need to revisit.

Yeah I thought it had more impact than the orangey red I had at first, but I have had the one or two comments privately about it not being right given the bi colour. I will need to sort this more once I get a bit of clear sky here.

Yeah it does John, although I am not keen on that god awful green that CCDstack spits out when it puts it puts NB images together. Like you say though endless possibilities.

Just working this data a little more now. Maybe looks better. RGB stars now.

Geez, thats looking might fine now Paul, exceptional.

If you feel inclined, I could send you hi res OIII, if you dont feel like capturing it yourself. Youd have to crop a bit though.

I like that colour scheme better Paul. More a balance of colours.

Lots of things to like here Paul...focus, guiding , noise suppression, highlights & shadow....but...sorry..the colours are somewhat monochrome and a little drab.

Wouldn't make an A-list in my book just yet. Stick with it

I didn't say that...the palette is just a little different that's all and hanging on the wall in freedom furniture would be an honour for any astroimage

The rework looks ok too

Hmmm let me see how things go for the next month. I will let you know. Thanks for the offer. Much appreciated.

Is this the first image or the one above your post. I get the first post, certainly a little drab.

Trying to collect SII data tonight but cloud is looming again. :) Lots to collect yet.
