Hi peeps,

Although I have had my EQ8 for ages, i haven't really gotten off my butt to get it all going. Mostly down to the fact I haven't purchased a mono camera yet but that will be soon so I must start thinking about getting it ready.

Anyway this isn't the EQ8 but the old Skywatcher GOTO Dob, just needed a Deep Sky photo hit and with finally a bit of time, and a small window of no cloud 1st quarter moon, i thought what the heck i'll quickly try and nab a couple.

M16 was only about 5 mins worth of subs but came out fairly nice https://www.flickr.com/photos/80336656@N07/14167021549/in/photostream/

NGC 6302 i think was around 3 mins - (don't look at Ray's first ;) but still i was fairly surprised it came out like this.

M8 was even less with the clouds making a run for my view

the noise was quite bad in the last two for obvious reasons.

anyway looking forward to pressing the button on a new mono (after umming and ahhing over a cooled DSLR going with mono) hoping I'll be right to rumble come new moon :prey:

Clear skies,

Rusty

Rusty,
Why did you decide to go with the mono CCD rather than cooled DSLR?

Thanks for the kind comments Ray.

Hi Paul, yes been changing my mind constantly but predominantly for the extra resolution. I think I have found a relatively cost effective way to go mono (the expense was the other factor). Either buy a qhy9 or atik 383l and use a 36mm slide draw for filters rather than a filter wheel. That means I can use my existing OAG , lodestar and even coma corrector too (mpcc) which would've needed to be changed to a RCCI or similar with more 'distance'.

Nice images Russell. I imagine getting round stars through a Dob would be challenging.

thanks Greg,

definitely not an ideal setup - you have to kind of take what you get - would've loved a few more hours of clear weather however.

cheers

Looks good Russell,

have you looked that SX mini wheel? it has an OAG built in so saves heaps of back focus. USB control for the filter wheel is very handy.
I had a mono, SX 7 position wheel, TS OAG and all fit in the 55mm for the mpcc. so doable.

Hi Alistair,

My thoughts are the mini wheel would work (@ 5x 36mm) but with the SX7 the sensor distance added up to around ~60mm
17.5mm atik383/ 33mm(?) SXusb7 / TSOAG9 9mm ... 59.5mm? +2.5mm if i get a QHY9. Maybe the 8300m has a shorter sensor distance to opening or i have something wrong with my calcs?

Hi

My stf8300 is 17mm including threads, the sx7 is 25mm +2 for threads and TS9oag is 9 +2

So 17+27+11=55
I use the mpccmk3 and the m48 thread. So distance required is 58 I think. But this combo works well with round stars in an f4

thats useful thanks Alistair i guess that means the 383L and QHY9 would work.

thanks
