NGC6164 a flower shaped nebula repro

Seeing Rick and Martins fabulous example of this and looking for something to image over the weekend I settled on this target.

I got 3 nights of excellent seeing (and it was cold) and the TEC180 and Microline 8300 (freshly serviced by FLI) are a good match.

This one is about 9 hours.

TEC180, FLI ML8300, PMX mount, MMOAG and STi guiding, Tak flattener.

Thanks Elio. I was happy with the resolution, whilst its not a 17 inch scope it does quite well for only 180mm. APOs have their appeal which is timeless.



Thanks Rod. I tried to keep a colour balance and not let the Ha become overwhelming. I even developed a new Ha blending method that seemed to pop better than normal and also a new way of enhancing shockwaves that are often delicate and dim.

An amazing object that huh? :prey2: and it looks like you may have collected some great data there Greg from your three nighter, I just think it is not being showcased in the processing..? The OIII extensions are excellent but perhaps back the sharpening off and dial back the push processing overall? You had good seeing I had crap seeing so you shouldn't need to push and sharpen as much :question: I'd love to see a repro as I recon there is a smacker of an image in there ;)

There is little to no sharpening there. Perhaps a tad of decon on the Luminance only. None on the O111 but as you say it is a tad pushed. I'll look it over again. Repros are always on the cards.

I've done a repro on this one as it was a bit harsh and the stars were too harsh.

I like the more natural look now and the stars are better as well.

I quite like this TEC180/Microline 8300 combo. The camera was doing -40C easily and I could have gone to -45 or perhaps even -50C but then darks/flats may have been harder to acquire being taken during the warmer hours. 10 minutes subs on the LRGB and 20 minute subs on the narrowband.

I've been away on hols but will play more with my NGC 6164 data when I get back. BTW, Alaska in summer would be a terrible place for imaging :)

Ive seen a few of this lately, tis a bit noisy Greg and lacking detail. Fairly deep though.

I tend to agree with Fred here, the image looks a bit noisy or speckled across the entire image. How long are your sub exposures out of interest? How do you focus and how often do you check it?

Colour nice though.

I had another look at a higher zoom in level and yes I can see the noise you are referring to. I did some noise reduction and it got rid of all that nicely without virtually any cost in detail. So I am happy with that.
