View Full Version here: : OTA weights
Hi guys
Does anyone have any data on weights of some common OTAs? I'm looking at an EQ mount for phot with an ED80, and visual with an 8" f/6 Newt... Does anyone know what an ED80 and what a GSO 8" Newt weigh?

Lee,
The ED80 weighs 2.7kg (I just weighed mine for you)
GS 8" weighs 9.5kg (the Dob model OTA)
and don't forget a finderscope! The GS finderscope and bracket weigh 450grms

An HEQ5 minimum but preferably an EQ6 and better thats if your going to sit them both on top otherwise the HEQ5 is ample.

If you use them together (the 8" & ED80)
GS 8" - 9.5kg
ED80 - 2.7kg
Finder - 450g
--------------
Total - 12.65kg
Plus EP, Camera, tube rings.
You will need a mount that can carry 15kg min.
The HEQ5 Pro has a load capacity of 16kg

Thanks guys for your help. I have my eye on a GM-8 currently, I likely wouldn't mount them together, but use ED80 for imaging on its own (or with a cheap guiding refractor), or Newt for visual.
Didn't think the newt was that heavy...... it is hard to judge weights accurately sometimes especially with bulky things......
