We got our 5-year-old daughter the Leap Pad ultra last Christmas. Performance and graphics aren't as good as a regular tablet imo, and although it's robust it's also heavy. It is, however, protected from the real world of web nasties.
Samsung makes a kids version of the Galaxy Tab, I think the 7" model. If I was buying again I'd go that route. Friends of ours did.

+1 for the Galaxy tab, or an ipad mini :)

ipad mini is the perfect size for primary kids, second hand iPad 2 for middle yrs kids -the app store is much better for kids than android

iPad mini, perhaps? For kids I'd get a refurbished one, currently they have some from $299:

I'd go for an iPad mini as well. Refurbished is good, but you'll need to decide if you want a retina screen or not.

I looked at the Samsung one and it is about 100$ cheaper than a ipad 2 - but I wasn't sure of the games installed on it. MAybe a good idea to go the ipad mini then I can use the games my Wife has already put on hers for the little one.
Cheers
Graham.

Yes, if you sign into iTunes with the same ID you will get all of the games you have already bought. I'd then sign into Game Centre with a different Apple ID so you can have separate stats and play against each other.
