Ha filter for OSC CCD

Hi everyone,

I realize this is best done on a mono camera, but until the finance minister approves that i'd like to get an Ha filter to do some HaRGB blended images.

I have a 42mm threaded IDAS LP filter that screws into either the SBIG 8300c nosepiece or the end of my flattener/reducer and works well from my light polluted backyard. I'm planning on swapping it out to do the ha subs.

Any recommendations for brands? Baader, Astrodon? Do the big bucks make a real difference? Will a 7nm be sufficient or overkill?

I happily used a Baader 7nm filter for this shot using a QHY8 OSC ccd

Hi have the 6nm Astronomik Ha filter and I'm blown away but the contrast I get with it. I'm using an STF-8300m.
I'd get as narrow as you can afford, it will have better light rejection and contrast.

Cool, that's a lot of detail from 12nm Ha, you should be happy with that :)



if I understand this correctly, you stack and process the Ha and RGB subs separately, then use the red channel from the ha image when merging the RGB image in PS.

It was only a test shot to see how the 12nm would fare with 10min subs in heavy suburban and industrial light pollution and an almost full moon, I think it passed the test ;)

Time to get serious with it after I adjust the flattener spacing and correct the focuser tilt.... If only the clouds would bugger off! :lol:

They were 10 min subs, lots of them. I think from memory about 8 hrs worth..

Dont go too tight (3nm) or you will exclude N11, a mistake I made although 3nm gives the best Ha detail. min 6-7 min is fine and gives more signal.

I use Prostar 2" H-a and an IDAS LP on my Atik 4000 OSC with a custom made 2" holder/spacer.

Just need to extract the red channel from the H-a subs and layer them on the RGB debayered subs. Works fine.

Craig Stark wrote a good article on NB line work with an OSC, as did Starizona.
