LMC&SMC need feedback on colour etc

I have been trying to get these two to look similar in colour and background etc..
I am looking for feed back as I am slowly losing it more quickly than usual! Which way if any, all comments gratefully accepted.

stunning shots bert. the left one looks more blue whereas the right one is more purple/grey.

They both look nice. I prefer the slightly less blue colouring of the LMC. I suppose I would prefer either something inbetween the 2, or adding a touch more yellow to the LMC one perhaps, such that it's more "dusty" colour, than a slight magenta colour. But I know how hard it can be to get right, and am not sure I could do better myself.

You could have a real challenge on your hands there Bert if you are trying to get them to look similar in colour. The SMC being so much further away (20 - 40,000 lyr) than the LMC, faint reds are going to be much harder to capture to start with. Plus the LMC is undergoing much greater star forming due to tidal influences with out galaxy than the SMC so you are going to have far greater nebulosity there anyway.

Yes I prefer the LMC shot too, looks more "natrual" I guess, and shows red H alpha emission areas better.

That is something I had not considered. You are most probably right. I did not even consider their different evolutions and current states. Thanks.

Maybe I was trying too hard to present them as a pair. They are obviously different. Maybe since the backgrounds are nearly equivalent should call it a day...or night!

Without feedback we all grope in the dark for enlightenment!

Thanks all now and future, will think more, as far as I know no one is trying to do as a high resolution wide field astrophotographs as I am attempting. If there is let me know.

Once I am happy with them will post full resolution pictures OK a bit less than 10MB the limit at the moment I can post.

They are both good Bert, to me the colour is secondary to the detail as I don't see them in colour visually. :thumbsup:

In that case the detail in the 10MB version is even better! The 73MB tiff is just a bit more exquisite.

Bert, looking at the histograms for each colour chanel in the SMC, I see that the blue channel is clipped, yet it is still overwhelming the other channels.
I have a 'fiddled with' version; you might not personally like it, but it does show that by selective curve adjustments on each channel rather than an RGB curve adjustment, one could acheive a reasonable colour result.

Bert,fwiw. The images in 'Hartungs' show the LMC has more blue in the cloud structure but Tarantula etc, is red/orange, whereas the SMC shows more whiteish in the main cloud,(end near 47Tuc), but is slightly more red/orange at the opposite end. These are taken thru the UK Schmit Telescope tho.
Not sure if it's a help at all.

I did a google for images of both objects taken thru the professional telescopes around the world and they were all different colours!!!

Doesn't help much when even the Pro's can't decide on a colour for each one.

Exactly Ken. Apparently there is no set 'Standard' for astro images.. :P..:D..L.

Exactly so! Even a G2 V colour balanced image is still only as good as the individual tastes of the person viewing it. That is why Astro-imaging is an art expression rather that true science.......unless the imaging is done in a photometry and/or Astrometry environment. The only thing really wrong with Bert's original images is 'he was not happy with the colour'.
