Hi.

found a problem in the calibration software I was using and have now started to reprocess past efforts to see what might have been hidden in the data. The linked NGC253 stood out as a significant improvement, so decided to post the repro - please forgive. This is from data taken with a now retired GSO 200f4 Newtonian, and the bright stars are a bit ropey - but otherwise it was probably worth the effort. Thanks for looking. Regards Ray

That's a good improvement, Ray. You got a nice coloured core on the new version.

Cheers,
Rick.

Not sure what you mean by ropey Ray. Everything looks pretty good to me. That's a nice NGC253.

Cheers

Fantastic Ray!

In the large image the dark lanes/filaments seem 3D and float above the disk.
First time I've seen this.
Superb colour too!

Cheers,

Justin.

Thanks Steve. The old scope generates a pretty big and irregular diffraction pattern around bright stars - makes it a bit difficult to match up colour and lum images sometimes.

Thank you Steven

Thanks Jo - very generous comment.

Thanks Justin.

If you haven't already seen it, there is a very heavily enhanced image by R Jay GaBany that shows streamers above the plane - they seem to be a real feature. http://server3.wikisky.org/imageView?image_id=904194

Robert pointed out that there is in fact a lot of "stuff" outside of the plane of NGC253. http://www.iceinspace.com.au/forum/showthread.php?t=112707

Hi Ray,
That really is an amazing shot -
how much integration time, what was the FWHM?
& was it from a dark site?

cheers

Hi Allan. this was 2 hours of lum with 2 and 3 minute subs plus 45 minutes each colour with 60 second subs. The sky was fairly dark and the FWHM was about 2.5 arcsecs.

Hi Bob. yep, the tendrils are an interesting feature.

Thanks Rod.

Hi Marco - thanks very much.

Thanks Nicola. there are also some other really nice galaxies in the vicinity of 253, but this one is special. Of course you have Andromeda to make up for it - that is just a blurry mess in the turbulence from down here.
