I’ve always wanted to capture an image that shows what it’s like for a Nightscape Photographer – out alone under the stars, contemplating life, the universe and everything.

It can be cold, cloudy, frustrating and challenging. But when it all comes together – it can be beautiful, simple, inspiring and motivating, enlightening and awakening.

I’ve wanted to capture this image for over 12 months. I had a failed attempt at it at IISAC2013, but I was finally able to snag this self-portrait of The Nightscape Photographer at IISAC2014.

It’s a single image, with a Canon 6D, 50mm lens @ f/2.2, ISO6400, 13 second exposure on a fixed tripod (no tracking). I had my intervalometer doing the snapping away on the 6D while I was up on the edge of the dam with my other camera, capturing a timelapse sequence.

I’ve got a bunch of different poses that I tried, but I really liked this simple one. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Nice shot, know the pose well, or for me its normally hands in the pockets to help keep them warm between exposures.

Excellent capture Mike, I know what you mean when one just wants that special shot and thinks about it forever, until the moment arrives and the capture is complete.

That's a magnificent image Mike - visually it's very easy to get 'lost' in it as you try to take it all in.

Thank you for sharing it.
