Dew shield for MAK

Heated or non-heated dew shield?

Any help much appreciated!

I rarely get dew issues with a simple dew shield in place with my refractors (though I just bought Kendrick Premier's for my Tak FSQ for travelling to the COLD dark site), BUT, I had MAJOR dew issues with the Mak I had.

I suggest a dew shield, heater bands, all powered by a thermo-nuclear powerplant.

I just got a Kendrick one for my 127mm Mak from Bintel. I didn't go for the heated attachment, as the shield keeps it dew clear for most of the few hour sessions I'd use it (though you can buy the attachment later). And if it did eventually dew over, I just use a 12 Volt hair dryer to keep it clear, every half hour or so.

:) I have Celestron's dew shield for my C9.25 and have not had dew building up and its been very damp here the last couple of weeks , I normally stay out 4-5 hours at a time .
here is mine .

I forgot I ordered a dew heater band for my telescope (5") do I also need a shield or is it one or the other?

:thumbsup: Dew shield Stefan , have a look in printing stores as they sell plastic sheets in any colour as long as its black , great for dew shields , different sizes , and a visit to bunnings for the rolls of sticky back valcro , job done on a budget .

It wasn't on their website, I emailed them asking if they had a Farpoint one to match my others, but they replied they had a Kendrick one specifically for the 127mm (which also wasn't on their site).

The Farpoint one fitted nicely on the rim around my 6" Mak, and it has a thinner piece of rubber. So that I could slide it on and off easily.

The Kendrick one I got was slightly longer than the Farpoint one, and had thicker rubber. As I didn't want to cut the rubber off, I found it mounted best by closing it just behind the rim holding the objective lens. Which means I can't slide it on and off, but have to undo down one end.

I was in Italy last year, and members at a club over there were making dew shields out of cardboard lines inside with felt. They were adamant that the felt was doing all the real work. And both the Kendrick and Farpoint shields are lined inside with felt.

P.S. Now that I think about it, maybe I should be putting the Farpoint one behind the rim as well. It'll fit.
