Moon on 19th April

SPX350 F27.5, PGRFlea3, Baader R filter.

Had a quick go at the Moon in fair seeing but FL was too long for the seeing but got some reasonable results.

Stacked 990 of 3000 frames in AviStack v1.81.

Very 'reasonable' indeed - more like superb! I'd be over the Moon with a result like that (pun intended).
I've always liked the angle that Moretus presents to us, it allows for a great fly-over effect in hires images like these.

cracking good resolution John.
Interesting comment on FL - to my eyes, the moon always looks better at slightly shorter FLs, Mars is better at longer lengths - not quite sure why.

Terrific image scale John, it’s a pity that the seeing didn’t really support the resolution of the finest details.

What is the minimum stack size that you can get away with from a 3000 frame AVI, before the noise becomes objectionable in the finished product?

I usually go for 25% minimum although others have had success with a couple of hundred but I always fail at that number as noise appears. I use 50-55fps so its easy to catch 3000, I would not go below 600. You need good seeing to get the very finest craters 1km across, I will have to wait for next time.

Thanks John, I usually achieve approx. 30 fps with the ASI120MM at 1280x960 and find that for my wider field shots, I can just get away with stacking 400-600 frames on those excellent nights.

I don’t think that I could ever return to the ToUcam days of 15 fps and 640x480 resolution…:)
