if I see advice spelt 'advise' one more time in a thread title I will jump off a tall building onto your OTA ARRRRGGGGGGGGGGG STOP IT pleaaassseeee stop it c..a ..n..t t..a..k..e i..t a..n..y..m..o..re
I have lost count of how many times I have seen this word missused in thread titles in this fine forum - must number in the hundreds now, please, please, please, the word is advice -
unless you phrase the question differently ie. could someone advise me on such and such .. otherwise its advice
its a little thing - but too me it has become like fingernails on a blackboard

from http://dictionary.cambridge.org/define.asp?dict=CALD&key=1237
'Definition
advice
noun [U]
an opinion which someone offers you about what you should do or how you should act in a particular situation:
Steven gave me some good advice.
I think I'll take your advice (= do what you suggest) and get the green dress.
Can I give you a piece of advice?
I need some advice on which computer to buy.
[+ to infinitive] My advice is to go by train.
We went to Paris on Sarah's advice.
NOTE: Do not confuse with the verb, advise.'

'advise
verb
1 [I or T] to give someone advice:
[+ to infinitive] I think I'd advise him to leave the company.
His doctor advised him against smoking.
I'd strongly advise against making a sudden decision.
[+ that] They're advising that children be kept out of the sun altogether.
[+ ing form of verb] I'd advise waiting until tomorrow.
[+ question word] She advised us when to come.
She advises the President (= gives information and suggests types of action) on African policy.
You would be well-advised to (= It would be wise for you to) have the appropriate vaccinations before you go abroad.
NOTE: Do not confuse with the noun, advice.'

Fringy.

Maaaaate!

It's not that I don't know where you're coming from and the point you're making. I make a living out of the written word and spend most of my day editing the stuff.

But I don't come to this forum with an editor's eye. Otherwise I'd spend the entire time hearing fingernails being drawn down blackboards:lol:

I think there's a danger of making this great place less inviting and welcoming when we head down this path?

How many people lurking on the fringes could be potentially discouraged from joining up if they think something like the mistaken use of "advise" or "advice" could potentially cause ire??

It's just my opinion, but it seems a little dictatorial.

Sorry, but that's how I see it.

Very amusing thread guys.
I, being of the 'very old school brigade', find that the, so called 'new way' of talking/speaking/writing, is irritating to say the least.
Thank you Kearn, for a most enjoyable way in which to highlight that fact.
If I may tho., I have 'learned to live with (some) of it'! Tis a bit hard to 'go against the flow', once it has started, without a very large piece of 4" X 2" in hand. I think you/we just have to grin n bear it. :D
Thanks guys. I can now get up off the floor & dry my eyes. :P

Let's not run the risk?

I think one of the really attractive aspects of IIS is its friendliness and non-intimidatory nature.

I know it's one of the reasons I joined, compared to other sites around at the time.

I think it's even part of the ethos of this site?

I'm just wondering how "friendly" it might appear to someone thinking of signing up to see someone railing so vehemently over something like this?

Just a thought, inspired by a sense of wanting to keep thing "laid back".

Cheers and clear skies;)

 touche' fella's, you know its funny and strange, but I dont care much about grammer and apostrophy's, punctuation ect. (obviously!) and I guess that would annoy the hell out of real pedant!
but en masse epidemic misuse of a short simple everyday word (and I have seen frequent use of the word advise instead of advice on ALL the forums and groups I frequent for years now) I guess I am not a full pedant, only a occasional spelling one.
It's not like its just a simple typo either, they dont bother either, there is only one other simple everyday word I find this with as well, but cant remember what it is atm :nerd:

LOL Laurie, we may be the last sentinals against a tide of spelling barbarism :P like king canute's with 4"x2"s ;)

Now that the baying lynch mob appears to be muted and sated, and after ruminating a little further on this response, I feel compelled I must remark upon the remarkable.
After comments all the way from aspersions on my gender, and indeed that I was actually menstruating! (moderators please! - that was actually sexist and blokey to say the least and straight from the front bar), and people lining up to put the boot in, including an advertiser!!! dark waters indeed!. And that my thread would actually change the course of the universe and put people off joining in - I wonder how many people are actually equally put off joining by such atrocious spelling?
I must admit I have always loathed peer group pressure since high school, and am extremely reviled by it, and it saddens me that it appears it is alive and well in here at times.
I know it has been pointed out many times that the policy of this forum is one that is likened to a extremely benevolent dictatorship, rather than a democracy, and we should act as if we are visiting in icemans lounge room for sunday lunch. But I think there is room for individuals who think for themselves still???
I remember being publicly attacked once over construction of my posts, they were accused of being eccentric and hard to read and causing a problem for others, and the usual fall of civilisation would follow ect., this person went on to become a moderator later on, I dont remember a single mob member saying 'lighten up' on that matter at the time, so I assumed it was ok to be pedantic and remark on the shortcomings of others, unless of course the 'mob' thought I deserved it?.
This person has also appeared at times in the distant past to have a personal 'vendetta' towards me I felt.
He may have percieved that I was a threat to something or rather and an agitator or worse ...a smartass!! heaven forbid!, I think he called me purely a troll despite my obvious interest in the subjects that make up this forum!
Personally I think/know this forum is more robust than some imagine or pretend it to be.

To Ving, I know you know I was only joking mate :) , and I well remember the deafening public outcry for the return of astrobelle, when you changed your avatar that time!

To all the supporters and funny buggers I salute you :)
