Anyone have a source for slotted ring nut removal tools?

I have tried the bicycle chainring nut tools, but still managed to bend one trying to disassemble.

Want good quality, about 0.5 to 1" spacing. Tried making my own - will need to temper and anneal the blade...

I got frustrated trying to find one strong enough and the right size - used a huge stillson wrench in the end :P

cheers

They are called C spanners, might help you looking for a better one.
Blackwoods have some

Sorry, I should have been more descriptive. I guess a picture helps:

These sort. Encountered commonly on RA axis, worm ends, camera lenses (just a LOT larger than those in the picture of course). No, a circlip plier WON'T do it - snapped every one I have tried.

I guess I have to make my own again

Aha,

I've seen those used on motorbikes, with the special tool. Are these any good?

Another thought, you might be able to start with a standard 1/2" drive socket the correct diameter, and with a bit of careful work with an angle grinder, make one.

Lewis,
What about a piece of flat bar in a suitably sized shifter?

For the nuts on the worm axes of my mount I normally use needle-nose pliers, not a lot of force needs to be applied there anyway.

The large, tight ring nuts on RA/Dec axes I usually loosen and tighten with a podger and a small hammer. Takes just a few taps against either slot.

For optical lenses you need to get a proper lens spanner, like this one (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/200973680666).

Cheers
Steffen.

Is this what you are looking for Lewis:

http://www.thorlabs.hk/newgrouppage9.cfm?objectgroup_id=14 30 (read further down that page, for full description)

There is also this one:

http://www.amazon.com/XCSOURCE%C2%AE-Spanner-Wrench-Repairing-DC313/dp/B00CQ251G8/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&qid=1397584935&sr=8-10&keywords=adjustable+spanner+wrench

I have one of these from my optic days, similar toi the one from Amazon, for undoing the retaining ring on binoculars. From memory, which I don't trust, I got it from either Edmund Scientific in the US or from RS Components in Australia. I had a quick look in my RS component catalogue, but couldn't find it. But, my catalogue is a couple of years out of date. They won't give me a new one, as I am no longer in industry.

Blackwoods may be another source.

Cheers Peter

Split nuts is what they are called, I don't know where to get big & strong drivers though, you may well be correct that you'll have to make your own.

Here is a small spanner that looks like it could be scaled up easily.

Learning as I go, it's called a face spanner, look for an adjustable one, Sidchrome, Facom & Gedore make them amongst others.

118A is for slotted nuts, 117A is for nuts with holes.
