I am looking for where I can purchase the white packing foam that comes with electrical items.
Does anyone know what it is called or where I can buy it.

Polystyrene. Is that the stuff you're thinking of?
There are places that will make moulded (and/or cut) polystyrene foam to spec. I had some made up in Sydney when I was moving house so I could move my plasma screen (having lost the original box).
I'll see if I can find/remember where and post a link.
What was it you wanted to pack/protect?
Hmmm, you mean the stuff that can be crushed but springs back?
That is EPE or Expanded Poly Ethylene.

You should be able to get sheets of it from any foam wholesaler. Try to steer clear of places like Clark Rubber who usually apply a huge mark-up.
Polystyrene (EPS) is brittle and doesn't regain its original shape.

I want to do away with the pick & pluck foam that breaks down over time in my eyepiece case.

Yeah, you definitely don't want polystyrene for that! Different foams for different jobs.

Would loosefill pellets do the trick?

Cheers
Steffen.
Yeah EPE is what you want.
There is also XPE (eXtruded PolyEthylene) which is a bit softer/more foamy, and XPS but these are probably not as nice as EPE for what you're doing, plus XPS doesn't have the same crush resistance.
XPS is typically sold as pink/blue wall insulation.

It is not as easy to find as one would think, Clark Rubber do not stock Low Density Polyethylene.
There is a place in Sydney that sells it. also the one below might be closer to you Alan.
PE FOAM PLANK
PE Foam planks are made up of thermolaminated layers and produced by non-polluting processes with out the use of flurocarbons. Outside the above thicknesses, PE Foam Plank is produced in sheet form and available in thicknesses from 15mm up to 50mm. Standard sheet sizes measure 1.1m (wide) x 1.8m (length) however can be produced in longer lengths if required.
