Managed to put daytime issues aside last night to get out under the stars again. When the moon is reasonably full I tend to do star trails / timelapse more often than not, and this is a location I have been wanting to do one at. The plan was to start the sequence with the valley still in deep shadow and then as the moon rose higher it would reveal the falls more and more. All was going well with the star trail side of things until some cloud started to move through which was still fine for the timelapse sequence, but with the cloud came a wind change and the spray from the falls was suddenly blowing back onto the camera. So that ended the session entirely.

Canon 5D Mk II, 14mm, F/2.8, ISO 800, 200 x 20 second exposures (but I didn't use them all in the final stack due to clouds) Cliff face on the left of the falls light painted with a torch during one of the exposures.

Thank you so much for all the great feedback everyone :D I really appreciate it. Not sure if I will ever release the timelapse. As I said I had to end it sooner than planned before the falls were fully illuminated. Will try again another moonlit night.

Awesome! I'm yet to find a waterfall down here that isn't totally surrounded by forest. I need to get out more during moonlit nights, I tend to snob our lunar friend a lot! Lovely image :)

Thank you so much James :D Last time I was in Tas I checked out a lot of waterfalls with the view to shooting them at night and couldn't find any that were appropriate at that time (but I of course only saw a very small fraction of the total number of falls in the state). I have done a bit of research on some other ones I didn't get around to seeing and there are a few which may have some potential which I will have to check out next time I am in Tas.

What the other guys said :) There's so much in that shot that keeps me coming back and viewing how the various elements all work together to make it quite a unique image.

Very nice.

I wonder though ... my eye is conflicted ... star trails up top, beautiful waterfall and pool down bottom, complex brown cliff face in the middle. I do wonder if it would have been better without the cliff face painted, so the pool and waterfall can become more the focus and their colours balance nicely with the sky without interruption? I dunno, I'm feeling analytical tonight I guess

Thank you very much Derek and Roger

Please be as analytical as you like Roger. I love your constructive feedback and I thank you for it. I agree that there is a lot going on in the image and is perhaps a bit messy composition wise, but there was not much I could do about the lighting of that cliff face. I think a few people have misunderstood me when I say I lightpainted the cliff face to the left of the falls. I mean to the left of the falls from the cameras view point, not from the falls viewpoint. The only artificial lighting is in the narrow strip between the falls and the left of frame. Have attached an annotated version to illustrate this. The rest of the foreground illumination is from the nearly full moon lighting up the landscape. I did the subtle lightpainting on that part of the scene to try and match the natural moonlight, otherwise it would have just been black.
I do have plans to once again shoot this location, but on a moon free night. I will be just trying to artificially light up the falls and not much else.
