I hear this place calling me. (http://www.yerranderie.com/welcome.htm) For its remoteness, history & nature. And perhaps even the stargazing.
Anyone ever been there, done that? What are the skies like there? Any clearings away from the houses?
Spending a couple of winter nights there to explore & observe ground & sky sounds very appealing indeed.
No idea when I'll find the time for it though.

Been there a lot over the years, and my partner was a caretaker there for quite a few years.
Local lighting is not an issue, the skies are OK to pretty good but not truly dark. It's just too close to Sydney for that. There's interesting heritage stuff to see there, some good walks, old mine sites to explore, etc. You will drive through areas with darker skies than Yerranderie whether you go via Oberon or Goulburn, so I wouldn't go there for dark skies, but if you want to mix a bit of observing with having a look around, then by all means!
Get in quick before its locked up, I say.;)

Thanks Al, it will be a memorable visit me thinks. Actually I need to go there at least twice, once by car and taking astro & bushwalking gear; and once by mountain bike and then fly out to Camden. The latter would be a great adventure, but transport will be a killer (I'm not keen to ride all the way from Tahmoor via Katoomba, and do they take bikes on the plane :screwy: I don't know)
Barry, most of the road from Nattai is probably still there, just closed off. My partner's dad helped build that dam, but it sure created some obstacles didn't it ;)
Never made it down there when it was still easy. The Yerranderie website mentions 4WD trips across under special permits several times a year. They must be using parts of that old route. Would have been interesting to see the remains of old Burragorang town when the water level was really low a couple of years ago.
