I unfortunately lost my car key last night. Does anyone know how much a replace key cost including the locking and unlocking mechanism that goes along with it? I know they aren't cheap.

I have a Mitsubishi.

Thanks!

Check the owners manual, you may need the spare key to reset everything.
A trip to a Mitsibishi dealer might be a good start.

If you still have one electronic key it will be a lot less than having to replace all the keys, the locks and reprogram the security.
That's of course if you don't mind some unknown person possibly having the missing key.

My 06 Pajero costs about $250 per key from MMA. The big issue is that the transponder inside the key has to be tuned to the car, and only MMA can do that. A regularly cut key will open the doors, but not start the car.

Sorry Stefan, but where Mitsubishi is involved, you won't get off lightly.

Not just Mitsubishi. All the manufacturers charge an arm and leg for one chipped key. Add the other arm and leg if you need the whole set replaced.

I sourced a third party key for a Mazda that was encoded for <$100. Didn't have the remote unlock button in it, but worked fine as a spare key. Try your local Key cutting place - they may have to send it away to be done, but it might work out significantly cheaper than a new genuine key.

Is it just me or is there a disturbing theme going on with IIS lately? Threads about lock-picking, disabling car alarms, cutting car keys... ;)

A lot different to the old days (1950's). 90% of English cars had a key from a range of about 100. Just about every garage had two keyboards of keys. I think we sold them for 2/6. If you knew your key number (it was stamped on the ignition lock). You just quoted the number and got your key.

If you did not have the number we took the two boards to the car and tried them till we found the right one.

Keys to the door were even more useless. Anybody with a coat hanger could get the doors open quicker than you could get the keys out of your pocket.

There was a story about the old 48/215 series Holden that jumping on the left front Bumper bar and right rear bumper bar would spring the door but I never saw it done. Besides it was easier to open the door with the coat hanger.

I misplaced the remote key for my prado, cost to replace by toyota was around $500. I managed to source a second hand key on ebay for $120 complete with new key blank and programmed it myself.

Cheese it, guys! He's on to us!

I once had a 1974 Corolla, and so did a mate. I used to steal his car with my keys every odd time, and move it around the corner from his house. His keys opened my doors, but wouldn't turn the ignition. Life was certainly more fun, back then...

There is often a routine to pair a new key to a car but you need an existing key to do it and you obviously need to know how to. Pairing the remote locking fob is usually easy.

My Xtrail has a "smart" key, the dealer warned me that if someone pushed me into the pool while it was in my pocket I may want to drag them in with me and drown them to save time after I hear the replacement price!

I got a quote from Mitsubishi just to get an idea how much they would charge.

$280.

Most locksmiths will do it for about 1/2 of what Mitsubishi charges.
My car is old and battered, so I just programmed the computer in the car to ignore the chip in the key, so I could just get a standard key cut.
