Second attempt at photographing nebula; first of NGC3372. Not that impressed with it so far, but it's still good to get an image :-)

About 12mins exp, mostly at 6400ISO & 30secs.

Celestron CG-5
Nikon D5100 (unmodded)
Skywatcher BD ED80

What's not to like? It's great for a first try. 3372 needs a lot of
exposure time to bring out all it's detail. Great job.

This is a very pleasing image Lee! By my standards the colour balance is spot on

For a first time image I would be pretty stoked to get this, it is definitely above most other first time attempts.

Cheers
Jo

Lee, I agree with Raymo and Jo - you're hard to please if you are not impressed with the result you got just now. You aren't going to do any better except for longer subs or many more of them. If you wish for more Ha (the red parts of the nebula) modding your camera is one way (although I have no experience with the Nikons).
Bottom line is you have done a fantastic job to create this image and should be quite proud of it.
Cheers,
Bruce.

Wow, ok. Thanks guys! I guess I was just expecting too much detail for the relatively short exposures.

At the moment I'm limited to 30 seconds, but I'm going to order one of those cheap eBay intervalometers.

Also still having problems with the colour; probably the same old "Nikon encrypted WB" story. Maybe in future I'll look at getting a modded Canon or something. Not sold on buying a CCD yet, but that might just be ignorance talking.

Thanks again! :-)

Yes a nice subtle, good quality image. I've just taken delivery of my modded Canon 40D, can't wait to try that myself.

Thanks Simon :-)

Congrats on your new acquisition! Look forward to seeing your images :-)

In reference to the original post, I'm now appreciating it a lot more, after trying to reprocess it and ending up with worse results. On the bright side, I've figured out what was going wrong with the colour previously.
