On the 15th April 2014, we'll (weather pending!) experience our first total lunar eclipse in 2.5 years!
For Australians and New Zealanders, the eclipse will be in progress at Moonrise - approx 5:28pm AEST when the totality phase will have just started. The further east you are, the more of the eclipse you'll see.
For more information about the event, including how and where to see it and photograph it, check out the article on IceInSpace here:

It will be low on the horizon so a bit of reconnaissance on this weekends full moon might be worth while. Looking forward to it. Might try a bit closer to the coast this time , the moon was really distorted from the lookout at the super moon.

The totally eclipsed Moon rising during twilight will make the Moon very difficult to see as it rises. Toward the end of totality as it becomes a bright coppery red and twilight begins to take hold, it should be a really pleasing sight. Watching a fully illuminated full moon rise won't be a good visual analogy. I suggest you watch an earth lit new moon set instead.
It's even more in twilight for Rick in Mackay than for us in the south east.

The reconnaissance was needed just to verify where the moon will rise and the lookout looks good, still a few coal ships on the horizon. The hard part will be getting a correctly exposed pic. But I really love these one of events, you have to addlib but sometimes you get lucky.
Cheers Rick

I think you'll find the moon will rise about 10 degrees south of where it was yesterday. Fire up your friendly local planetarium software to check.

Rick,
I still don't think there is much value in this approach.
Azimuth at rise
During the equinox, the change in rising azimuth between March and April Full Moon is biggest. Full Moon rises some 17 degrees further south on April 15 than it did on March 16. The moon rises at a much more similar azimuth of 101.5 degrees tomorrow night (Wednesday 19th @ 19:54 in Mackay). On April 15 it rises at 100.5 degrees azimuth at 17:47 but it's highly unlikely to be visible as it rises. Remember, the sun will be setting as the moon rises, the moon will be in totality and extincted by atmosphere. Depending on the brightness of the eclipse, I'd expect the totally eclipsed moon to be visible as a bright coppery colour in a deep blue twilight sky towards the end of totality.
Times and azimuths quoted above are for Mackay.
For observers in the south east of the country, these figures are for Canberra:
............................Moon rise time(DST).................Azimuth
Tuesday 18, March............20:00............. ..................98.5
Wednesday 19, March.......20:36.................. ............103.3
The Moon's rise position during the eclipse is exactly halfway between tonight and tomorrow night's azimuth.
Getting exposure correct
During twilight, you can just expose using the camera's metering with some bracketing. The sky brightness will exceed or be similar to the eclipse brightness. I did this when comet McNaught appeared bright in the sky during twilight in 2007. Towards the end of totality and twilight, transfer to manual exposure control.
cheers

Ive been running through this upcoming eclipse & personal experience tells me it is Not very favourable conditions !
Let me explain : Going through photos and Planetary software, the last total lunar eclipse I captured was back in June 16th 2011 - moon setting in the west as sun rose in east, the moon had eclipsed about an hour & 15mins before sunrise when the sky was rather dark'ish and I captured some nice shots with the ED80 of the Red Moon - but as twilight began, I actually lost sight of the moon about 20mins before sunrise and was flatout bringing up the moon in photoshop with a 3second exposure during twilight, any longer and the sky would blow-out !
See Attached Photos, 1st with ED80 with moon at approx 25deg Alt, 8secs tracking.
2nd taken @ 80mm lens F5 iso400 at approx 10deg alt and fading fast as twilight strengthens ?
This coming eclipse has the moon rising 5:30pm (East) in totality as the sun sets (5:30pm)- so, a very bright sky indeed ?
It is not untill approx 6:10pm that totality finishes, by then the moon is still only aprrox 13degs altitude and a waning twilight sky. Guestimate - just dark enough to capture slightly ? as similar in 2nd attached pic, maybe a smidge betterra ? So, 10 - 15 minute window whilst about 10deg alt or smidge higher.
Anywhich way, I truely doubt seeing much If Any, when eclipsed moon is rising at see level ? ? :scared3: :face:
Just my thoughts, so, if the weather is clear, Im thinking of captureing a wide angle composite shot closer to the coast with some Highrise Gold Coast building/s in the foreground, when moon at 10deg alt or somewhere abouts, say, the Q1 building or the Soel Building, maybe reflection on the Nerang River, hopefully with the end of Totality and through the Partial & Penumbral stages ? ?
I Guess, see how it pans out when the time comes

Should still be an interesting evening visually even if it is somewhat challenging photography wise. The sun setting, the sky getting darker and then a coppery red moon slowly appearing out of the twilight glow 10 degrees above the horizon.

Agree Rick, yes, visually good, and seeing/photoíng the later part of totality & waning Penumbral stages.
Just around my traps, some thinking of a bright red moon rising out of the ocean - maybe a little dissapointed !
Tho, you have me thinking actually, could be very possible to capture a nice widefield red reflection in a smooth water when at 10degs'ish

Now you have me thinking about a new location. The local surf club is on the western side of a small bay, less wind and smoother water. The best part is that tuesday is my RDO and I have lots of time to set up. The biggest if, is as always the weather.

I am still looking forward to it... It lasts for over 70 minutes, so when the sky is darker it should be fine. It would be my first eclipse through a telescope. But the weather is so crazy here that nothing is certain. :(

Apparently the further east you are, the more you will see. I am fortunate to be about half hour drive from Byron Bay, the eastern most point in australia. There is a lighthouse which has a large carpark ontop of a huge hill. Very high elevation. Thats where I will be:D. weather permitting of course.
What a great idea!

Yes, indeed!
If anyone from Western Australia is wondering what they'll see the answer is almost nothing! It's just about all over by the time it rises over Perth and if you know what you're looking for you might just see a bit of darkish grey penumbral shadow on the top side just after it rises, but that's it. Better to forget this one and mark the calendar on the evening of 8th October instead.

I have just realised I previously posted this question in the wrong section. Can anyone offer an answer - see below:
"I was just asked this question and I wasn't sure myself so I am throwing this out to everyone for a quick and hopefully better answer.
The lunar eclipse is scheduled for the 15th of April in our hemisphere - however, will one also occur over the US on the same day (their time) or would it occur on the 16th (for example) or would they not experience one at all in the Northern hemisphere? "

BTW - I ask this question as I have a colleague in the US who is almost 90 and has never seen one before (or much of astronomy) so I want to make sure there would be something for him to see if he tries to observe it.

I think it is the same day but we in eastern Australia see the eclipse as the moon rises (just on sunset), in the us the eclipse is around midnight in central and eastern parts of North America but will be in the later hours of the morning the further east you are in that part of the world.

Hi Folks
I'm going to try and image the eclipse at home here in Melbourne with the view of using said images to calculate the Moon's diameter with my Astronomy Club students in the new term. Melbourne being what it has been in recent weeks (months) I don't fancy my chances. So if possible could I please ask for the opportunity to use one or two images from those of you lucky enough to view the eclipse.
Kind regards.

Just in case it's relevant, there will be some hardy/optimistic/desperate astronomers down at Flagstaff Hill near the lighthouse. But you're right, the forecast is less than optimistic. In fact most of eastern NSW is a write-off. Adelaide looks good and flights aren't too too expensive. Unfortunately the salt mine calls.
At least we are being warned well in advance. It's worse when you go out expecting to see something and then it clouds at the last minute. Oh well, there will be other eclipses and they won't all be clouded out.

I was gonna attempt to partially frame the Opera House sails as the foreground and the eclipse as the background. It lines up in TPE http://db.tt/QEqLwu9Q

Thanks for letting me know. I have no idea how comfortable I will be with my dob on a trolley (yeah, I bought the trolley for the eclipse) and how far I can go (it would be the first time I really go out with it!), but thanks for letting me know. I am sure it will have to be collimated when I finally stop, but it should be fine. I have learned to collimate it pretty quick.
If it is cloudy I might still go out (in case it gets better - at least for a few minutes!), but if it is raining I think it is pointless, particularly with my dob on a trolley. :(
I will have everything ready though in case the rain stops.

The most part of the Aus East Coast is now under the influencs of both the downgrading Cyclone Ita, and the Tasman Low, Grrrr.
Forecast has SE QLD under a sky with 15 - 30 % cloud cover and while this sounds promising, unfortunately when in a situation of a moon rising ON the Horizon, well, one typically needs a cloud free area of sky in that direction for several hundreds of Klm's !
Considering the bulk Remnants of Ita will be several hundred K's East of NSW/Qld Boarder and made up with low level and medium level cloud _ Im thinking the best bet would be locating as high as possible and further west on a Mountain. This way, atleast there is possible better chances of seeing some moonage as it rises ? That said, this does Not rule out a percentage of Local cloud on the coastal fringe ! !
Just my asessment as Im thinking Mnt Tambourine at this stage
Wish all the best to those going ahead as well

For those who live in a place plagued by bad weather...
The eclipse will also be streamed online.
I live in the East, close to the beach, and will have to watch it online (most probably)... Better than nothing... Provided the place where the streaming is supposed to be will not be plagued by bad weather too...

Hi Bob,
I misspent my youth observing from Arthur Page's Mt Tamborine observatory on the east face of Mt Tamborine. Spent more weekends up there than I care to admit to at all times of year. Back in the 70's and early 80's, when it was clear and seeing and transparency was good-Wow! But believe me, the last place you want to go when the weather is less than ideal, is a rainforest. On that east face, moist air pushes in from the ocean, up the mountain and condenses as a cloud cap often with rain right over your head.
cheers

Appreciate your imput Joe and yes, late night and early morn condensation is often the case, there is also moisture still rampent in the atmoshere particularly in the low and mid levels, hence local cloud formation, coming from the south, also, anyones guess to where some sun will be shining to thin this out a bit ? Fortunately there is no onshore flow around tomoro, which would certainly add to the frustration. apart from that, this event is only early in the evening, temps should be mild with a bit of wind chill, so, some warm clothes may be on the gender
Ill be taking further asessment with your good advise of local conditions tomoro midday'ish to determine which location in my area may be best suited

Hi Bob,
Canberra looks like there is a chance it might be clear. Original plan was Lake George (east horizon from home is no good) but looking at Skippy Sky, it looks like your chances improve substantially if you spend that same 30 mins travel about (50km) south of the city. Skippy sky is predicting encroaching cloud during the eclipse from the north which is the southern edge of the big cloud mass that will possibly cruel Sydney and the central coast's chances.
If so, I will probably head out with girlfriend for a romantic twilight picnic and low key viewing and if I feel like setting up the mount, maybe a few snaps. I've been very ill for many weeks. Yesterday was my first day back at work. Still a bit weak and fatigued so I will need to take it easy for next few weeks.
There is an article on my web site about the eclipse with a slightly different approach to Mike Salway's excellent article.

Any locations recommended in Victoria/Melbourne?
Cheers.
The area along the Hume Hwy between Goulburn and Yass offers a few side roads with some reasonably unobstructed views to the East. Watched the transit of Venus from there. Low Eastern Horizon wasn't quite as crucial then, but should still be pretty usable for this event. First spot I used (around sunrise) was here:
https://www.google.co.nz/maps?saddr=Sydney,+New+South+Wales, +Australia&daddr=Wollogorang+Rd&hl=en&ll=-34.957995,149.433289&spn=1.262828,2.705383&sll=-34.811865,149.513068&sspn=0.009883,0.021136&geocode=FSE5-_0dTjwDCSk_dJrzOJgSazFQqDIWaH0BAw%3 BFbzN7P0dLlzpCA&oq=sydney&t=m&mra=ls&z=9
Good, but had to move further south/west to get away from cloud band advancing from the North. Sound familiar? ;)

That's a hard one - see Bob's posts. I agree with him in that you probably won't see much to start with. However having seen near-horizon lunar eclipses before, I would think you should get some good views by 6.00. And the partial phase is nice too.
As far as the exact location goes - do follow your own judgement one you get close. You may not even need to travel as far from Sydney as that.

Only one I've done so far is one with the Moon, Mars and Spica:

Nice portable set up David. 10 out of 10 for effort mate!
Cheers
Dennis
Expecting nothing, I was pleasantly surprised to get a 5 minute glimpse of the Moon about 50% eclipsed here in Dunedin. Enough time to set up the 60mm for a closer look. It really was better than nothing.

This was about the best I could do with the scope by the time the moon cleared the trees and houses.
ISO 1600, 1 sec. Taken at 18:39.

Thanks David :)
I've played around a fair bit in the past with my Canon EOS 7D and 70-200mm f/4 IS lense experimenting with procedures and processing to achieve some reasonable APs... still a work in progress with much work still to be done.
Have recently acquired a GoTo mount and Orion ED80T so now have a whole lot more to learn...lol Tonights photos taken with my dslr attached to Orion scope... cheers!

Eclipsed moon rising over the Adelaide hills. The viewing area at the airport was quite full so quitea a bit of interest in the event.
#1 Already past full eclipse as it rose next to the TV towers.
#2 Moon, Mars and Spica if you look hard
#3 Ownership of this one is disputed. My daughter was watching the camera and hit the shutter for this one, but I :P did all the setup.
#4 A gratuitous take off for good measure.
Here's what I bagged with my 1000D, with kit lenses, on a tripod, obviously cropped and compressed.

All,
Here some images from East Melbourne, mostly iPhone based.
We had a great time, quite some people bunched up at the beginning, after 6:45 is was quiet.

From the last photo I can see it looked MUCH better than here. It looked APOCALYPTIC here. It could not have been worse. And it had been fine during the day... And today... CLOUDFREE. Only during the eclipse it looked apocalyptic.
You shared your nice setup.... I am sharing the view through my online telescope.... :(

The view of the horizon at the eastern most point of australia. Not a cloud in the sky (except for THAT one) It was pretty good when it got high enough though. Did anyone else think that it looked eerily like mars when it was just past totality ie big red sphere, dark detail in the middle with a white end on it.

hi All,
having a good location for the Lunar Eclipse at Culburra SA
the sighting was good, my camera work left me with a lot of work too do in the future, practice makes perfection, although a pleasant night was had, although I have a couple of keepers from my camera work from last night,
regards,
Peter,
