Anyone here with TPG and getting drop outs? Nothing will load for about 30-60 seconds then all of a sudden be fine and happens every 10-30 minutes.

My TPG conection has been been going fast and slow for the last 3 months. At the moment it is good but at times it slows to dialup speed. Mine can be good for weeks and then slow for days, really frustrating. It is almost like telstra is sharing my conection with someone else? I have tested / replaced everything and my problem is with the lines. Sometimes my net will go faster if I unplug the phone. Copper wires, dont you just love them...not, and the last telstra tech told me it would be at least 5 years before the NBN is available in my street (or never if the current gov has its way)

You can test your conection here http://www.tpg.com.au/support/speed_test.php

Good luck

Sounds like bandwidth problems, too many customers and not enough bandwidth. Telstra had this problem when I was with them, told them to stick it and went back to my original provider, now I have consistent speeds all the time.:D

Hi Stefan,

Have you checked whether your ADSL router is periodically losing connection
and then simply re-connecting?

Whenever it drops out, if you haven't done so already, you might want to
login to the web server on your ADSL router and checks its status or examine
the status LEDs on the front of the router itself.

If it transpires that your ADSL router is dropping out, if you have a handset on
that same line, have a listen and see if the line sounds clean.

Best regards

Gary

Stefan,

I've had this problem for about a year or so.

It's been good the last week.

But, as Gary suggested, I permanently have a browser window open for the admin console of the router. As soon as things stop responding, I check and it has sure enough dropped a connection.

I just haven't bothered to get anything done about it.

When the connection is slow or just stops all the LED's on my modem are still on. I have checked my PC and it is still connected.

I have a cordless phone which actually operates on a different frequency and is designed to not interfere with wireless networks (I tested it by loading a webpage on my mobile and it was fine). It seems it's my PC.

Last night and today has been alright.

mine has been iffy for quite some time. the funny thing is i have been with TPG since 1995. I cannot get ASDL2+ from my exchange and i have been operating on adsl1 all these years. well I think its about time to move to a ADSL2+ service because of the slow speeds i am getting now. it can drop to below 56k at times, then go up to 512 - i am on a 1500 plan - thats sad as the exchange is less than 700m from me. I am looking at moving to EXETEL, but the thing that really scares me the most is all the links i have with my emails from TPG, accounts, software and forums.....

David,

Speak to them about being able to keep your email address. I seem to recall that when I worked at Optus, they would allow you to keep your OptusNet email address for a nominal fee every month, despite not being a customer of theirs as an ISP.

not too sure how that would work as it would be through a completely different server/system and the data?

It's still OK to do so. :)

I still send/receive emails on my OptusNet account even though I'm connected via TPG.

Bad news, telstra runs the exchange and dictates how many adsl 2 ports are available and are not interested in upgrading their infrastructure. I have a friend down the road and telstra would only give them dialup and told them to get a wireless account $100 per mth and only a couple of gigs download. I have been on TPG adsl 2 "offnet" for a few years and until recently have been getting speeds of 8000kbs 200 gig per mth for $59.00.

Been with Westnet now for 7 years. Taken it everywhere we go/move. Never had a single issue that was not resolved over the phone, and I have rung them maybe a dozen times in 7 years.

Current speeds according to that speed test are 11.74 Mbps download, 1.28 MB/s upload, 34 ms latency, 0 Jitter and 0 packet loss. Not the fastest ADSL2, but best for the old copper around here (and 2.5km from server).

My internet was sub-ADSL2 when we moved in. One call to Westnet and they gave Telstra a serving, and voila within 3 hours, line speeds consistently as above (which is more than enough for all my uses)

Interesting I was having the same issue last night. My problem turned out not to be ISP related. My Galaxy S3 was the culprit, once the wifi was turned off on the phone all was well. Not exactly what was causing the problem, there are reports of similar problems out there in the real world. For the time being I've put a static assignment in my dhcp tables for the S3 as I suspect an Ip address conflict was the most likely scenario.

I had this exact same problem when I introduced a new iPhone 5s into the house. As soon as it was on the WiFi, our TPG ADSL service got real spotty. Speed was fine, but some common sites just wouldn't resolve ... like it was a DNS issue. Flip the phone into Airplane mode and reboot the modem, and all was good. Seemed to resolve itself after a few days.

I ran some virus and anti-malware scans on all my devices at home, changed passwords and stuff and it seems to be better.

Maybe there was something dodgy I cleaned up!

i use to have the same problems when i had adsl 2. The line has too much noise or too far away from your exchange. Try to get cable internet or nbn when it becomes available. If you are using a laptop and connecting by wireless the signal might not be strong enough. You could always buy a wireless extender. Make sure your modem/router is not near anything electrical such as,microwave, cordless phones,TV etc etc. I hope this helps and good luck.

Get a Gmail account - completely portable, no matter who your ISP is or how many times you change.

Same here. I'd be an IfTelecom customer if ADSL was available in my street. SmallPuddle Cable is the only choice. IfTelecom still manage all my email addresses.
You might have to do some email configuring since ISPs don't normally let people on other provider's networks using their mail servers without specific authorisation.
