View Full Version here: : Milky Way rising over Lake Eppalock

I was inspired by others during a weekend at Lake Eppalock.
Canon 5D Mark II with 24mm lens, 35 mins, f6.3, ISO100.
This image was actually just filling in time for a 2+ hour star trail with the same framing intended to capture Venus rising pre-dawn but this ended up the better shot, especially after I ruined the longer one by leaving the camera doing its dark frame while the heat of the rising sun warmed up the shutter blades in front of the sensor.. but I was too lazy to get up at sunrise after three late nights..

Outstanding, Phil. That is truly beautiful.
I imagine a print of that would look stunning.

That's very impressive, such a clean image with outstanding framing. I love how the milkyway is positioned between the two taller trees.
Great work Phil :thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:

Thanks H. Printing.. yes.. something else I should try again!
Thanks Rod. As per usual, some elements of my images are conceived/planned in advance and others just work when you get the shot! I was really just framing this up for the morning shot before realising how well it worked for the milky way.

Thanks Mike & Graeme. Getting good colours is definitely why I prefer single shot star trails.

Yeah, great shot Phil, love the thin black silhouetted trees. You should really try getting serious about this night scape photography thing :P

Yeah Phil you should give it a go. You might even win a Malin award:rofl:
Beautifully done perfect composition, the trees add interest and the blur on the MW is really lovely like super lens bokeh.

Thanks Mike. There's lots of small dead stuff in the lake edges there that just looks messy. Was pleasantly surprised to see how this bit framed up.
Thanks Greg :D
Thanks Darren!
Very nice composition, Phil !

Great shot Phil. the reflection of the trees on the lake looks great. Did you use any in camera noise reduction? I thought maybe a 30+ min exposure would create a bit of noise even when the ISO is set at 100.

In case you're still watching this.. the clue in my post was a bit cryptic but yes I was using in-camera dark frame subtraction for this.

Phil,
You brought tears to my ol' eyes.....
We had 100 Acres overlooking Lake Eppalock. When we bought - the view looked just like that!!
After ten years of drought, the Lake was well and truly empty and so was my wallet - buying $200/ week of water!!
All the 5,000 trees we planted died, as did the sheep.....
