View Full Version here: : Cats ruined my night!

I think I've discovered a new source of annoyance that ranks up there with neighbours who leave their backyard lights on for no reason, cloudy nights after clear daylight skies and ice cream trucks playing music through incredibly bad sound systems.

This new distraction is a four letter word: Cats.

After being sick with the flu and having a cloudy night last night, I finally got the chance to get outside and log some time observing. I figured I'd do some sketching while I had the chance. The sky was unusually dark so I figured that tonight would be a relatively good night, other conditions permitting. After setting things up (then going back inside because I forgot my watch... then going back again for my pencil... and again for eyepieces) and getting everything aligned, I prepared for a bit of observing.

Next thing I hear is a meow.

Now this in of itself isn't particularly disturbing; we own a cat who likes to patrol (and I do mean PATROL) the roof of the house at night (how he gets up there or outside is a mystery to me given how fat he is), so I assumed that this was simply our cat walking around and meowing at me for some reason.

But then it happened again. It was coming from next door, who also apparently have a cat. And then it happened again. And again. And again! All through the observing session this cat meowed for all it was worth, including moving around the yard next door so that it came from a different direction each time. When the surrounding area is mostly silent, it became the biggest distraction I've ever faced while observing. And it drove me up the wall.

Still, I did my sketches and tried my best to ignore it. By "tried" I mean refrained from jumping the fence to scare it away so it would shut up. The worst was yet to come.

I was just finishing a final sketch when the cat next door suddenly let out a real loud wailing noise. The kind of noise that cats make when they fight.

I jumped a foot into the air. My hand, holding a pencil still on the paper, also jumped a foot in every direction. With the pencil still on the page.

Long story short, I've got a heavy, dark scribble all over my sketches, totally ruining them. After putting up with the meowing, the cold and coughing inbetween trying to sketch, my sketches are ruined and my night was more or less a waste. I swore loudly and started packing things up because my patience had finally given way and I was freezing cold. The cat next door shut up and scampered off somewhere else. Incidentally MY cat also happens to be missing so I'm assuming that it went next door and started fighting.

In future, I'm going to remove all cats from my observing area by leaving trails of cat crunchies, like the ones Whiskers makes or something... and I'll leave it open juuuust a bit so that they can see the goodies but can't get to them without some hard work. Hopefully that'll keep them away. Or possibly create some sort of competition to see who gets the right to lay claim the prize of cat crunchies.

Incidentally, if anybody wants to buy a cat, I'm more than willing to sell one;)

Hi soldant,

Well i don't have trouble with cats, but i have a neighbour who turns on the rear flood lights so his dog can see his friends dog when they come to visit him.

I know what i would rather have, give me a meowing cat any time.

Hiya Soldier Ant,

Sorry for laughing, but that was funny.

Next time you have the problem, just a short spray over the fence with the garden hose and the Cat will shut-up! You don't need to soak the yard (the neighbours won't be happy), just a very quick squirt. Cats hate it.

And it makes you feel good too

Wish I could stop my neighbours Horses from farting on a quiet observing night!!! Now, that's annoying.

My neighbors outside light is a spotlight and it shines directly into my back yard, I will ask him to turn it off soon, anyway I went out of town a little way tonight for what I would describe as a best ever observation night, cold but clear and I saw heaps of stuff, just back home now.
BTW what is the name of the DSO in Centaurus which is circular but it has a dark v shaped split through the centre?

Do you possibly mean Centaurus A Galaxy?

That'd be the one.

You are a lot more patient than I would have been. I love cats and all animals but, sometimes enough is enough.

Hi Soldant,
I have 4 cats in my place..they get along alright...the strays can be a nuisence...I give them a spray with vinegar and water..it doesn't harm them and they'll spend a fair bit of time cleaning it off..after which they'll think twice before copping another dose!!!..I tried the crunchies-out-the-frontyard trick...it turned into an almighty fight between several felines which resulted in scene from CSI with fur!!...nope!!..won't be doing that again!!!

Hi Leon,

Your neighbours friend must be my neighbour. He too leaves the back yard flood light on for his dog so that the poor didums doesnt have to sleep in the dark.

Funny though he doesnt seem to care enough to actually go out and play with it for even 5 minutes in a week (nor can I recall when it was actually walked, if ever), but it can't be left to sleep in the dark....

Noises don't annoy me as I have my mp3 player blasting away when I get to do a bit of observing.

I used to do that too. I'd set up my MP3 player while I was observing. Dunno why I don't do it anymore, I probably should.

I'd LOVE to spray the cat with water or anything else. Problem is I can never actually FIND it. This thing is like a shadow in the night, it must have some sort of advanced technology that lets it fade away into the darkness because I can never, ever find it when I'm looking for it. I don't even hear it during the day so I have no idea where it goes when the sun is up, but it's out at night and it is vocal.

Also it's ironic you should mention Centaurus A, since that was the last object I was sketching before I jumped a foot in the air and totally ruined everything.

My neighbours seem to leave lights on to help their grass grow I think! Both back neighbours have flood lights aimed horizontally, to cover their whole backyards, and mine.... :mad2:
I observe with my dogs (astro-dogs) in the yard - you should see the size of their pupils in the dark - must be 12mm+ at least :rundog: :rundog: . If only ours could dilate so far! I'm sure the dog sees just fine in the dark with those pupils, the light probably more annoys the poor thing....

our 2 cats are purely indoor cats. i built a cat run for them which they use during the day and they stay in at night... i was getting visits from the neighbours cat for a while but a quick soaking with the hose fixed that :P

soldant,

You're lucky you only have a cat wailing at night. One of my neighbours had a dog that used to howl the whole night if I was out observing and that sparked off every other canine in the area. Peace was only restored when said neighbour moved.

As for cats, my rat, erm cat finds my nocturnal activities a constant source of interest. She actively assists in equipment setup in a supervisory role, normally by sitting in doorways or escorting equipment during it's trip from the house to garden and of course she just loves to ensure the setup is correct by watching while sitting on top of my observing table.

During the observing session she waits lurking in shadows for her chance to snatch the ultimate prize, my observing seat. If I vacate it for more than about 2 mircoseconds there's an 8.5kg fur, fangs and claw ridden monster sitting there and she don't like to share!

My cat likes to keep me company when I'm outside at night. She lets me know when the possums are making a sneak attack.
