I'm in Canberra and am after a 12" Dob. Solid tube is fine. Would also consider something bigger. Also see my trade advert in this section re. collectible Nikon equipment from the 50s - 80s.

Yeah, Bintel does make a good cheap dob, I have considered them. But I just can't fight the cheapness in me, I can't ever remember buying something new!

hmmm...I'm also talking to someone in Sydney about a trussed Meade so maybe, maybe not. Two questions, one for me and one for you...

1. Would it fit in the wife's Corolla.....?

2. What are the coatings like on your primary and secondary? GSO makes a good value-for-money dob (have friends with some) but their coatings have gone through several bad patches, I'd be keen to know what yours look like when back-lit. Of course this would involve taking out your mirrors, which is WAY to much to ask...so hmmm...

That and I'm not sure what couriers would be from Nowra to Canberra. Melbourne to Canberra is only $70, but that's major centres so...either that or one hell of a drive...with a newborn at home my wife may just kill me...

Worth a thought though, "benzhead at hotmail dot com" if you'd like to chat some more :)

Doubt a 12' dob would fit in a Corolla. Mine was delivered by a small truck & by the way, your looking at 20kg for the OTA & 17.5kg for the base. 37.5 kg all up. It's like putting a hot water service in your car.:eyepop:

Well, I've committed to buy now. Will make the 4-5 hour drive (return) and hopefully come back with a scope. If it doesn't fit...I have no idea, courier it may have to be!

The OTA is only 1450mm long I think, it should fit in the front if I crank the passenger seat all the way back and put the mirror end in the foot-well...shall give it the dark-arts try!

I'll post my results, it may inspire other small car owners to buy bigger scopes :P

Now, if only I could fit one on my motorbike...

Well, the scope is fantastic and it and the base easily fit inside the wife's Corolla! So easily in fact that I'd have no qualms about taking it to a dark site/ party.
