what a Blonk... Taking shots of the Constellation of Orion and didn't realise that a pole was creeping into the picture so I was only able to stack 3 minutes of exposures.
Canon 6D with 50mm F1.4 @ F2.8 5 X 40 secs for a total of 3.3 minutes exposure. Tracked with a SkyTracker. Only just getting the faint Barnard's loop showing on the right hand side. I'll remember to keep a clear field next time.

This lens blew me away 60 second exposures at f 1.4 were totally over exposed??? The other problem was very marked seagulls at the edges of the Full Frame.

Strange, I have also a lighter background on the bottom (north) side.

Mine is taken with 10x30s with EF 85mm f/1.8 squeezed to 2.5 @ ISO6400 with a 6d as well.

To be honest, you have used too aggressive noise supression as I see a patchy background and the stars can be brighter by stretching the 'levels' in Photoshop or darktable.
Is your pic cropped ? My 85mm shows slightly more than your 50mm.

Nice Paul. Shows all the important stuff--M42, the horsehead and a faint suggestion of Barnard's loop. Pity you didn't get more exposure. There are some artifacts as the PP mentions. Are they due to noise reduction or are they compression artifacts? Not sure.

Light pollution gradient? That's what it looks like to me.

Might be the local church (500m away) in Sutherland as it is illuminated from below and no other bright sources exist there (18km from the SAAO) and the sky is virtually light pollution free.
