After using the Lab colour boost technique on 2 other galaxy images I thought it would be worth checking how it went with this NGC1365 image.
To me this is the best galaxy image I have gotten recently and among my favourite images I have taken so far.
I think it gave a nice boost without a noise hit.

I'll be adding to this image next year and bring it up to a 25-30 hour job as its one of those targets that's worth the effort. Its currently at 11 hours 50 minutes.

I like the colour and detail Greg, top work. Even with the data you have, you could process noise out more without affecting detail.

Thanks Allan. Yes this one turned out better than normal. I guess its brighter but I also had a patch of good seeing.
Cheers Ian. Glad you liked it.
Thanks Fred. Yes I did have one version that did show less noise. I'll work on that a bit more. You're right I should be able to get that lower with what I have.
Cheers Allan.
Thanks Rod. Its one of the best southern galaxies.

Nice image Greg:)
Is the blue dot in your image a hot pixel or the remnant of Supernova 2012fr.
See APOD image by Martin Pugh.

Looks to me to be in the same place.:)
I would be interested in your thoughts. :)

Ah no, I must be conflicted!
It may well be. Funny you point that out as it was brighter than that in the image and stood out more and I toned it down.
I'll check the masters and see if its in each one or only blue.
It doesn't quite look like an artifact.

Looks very nice Greg. Great detail in the galaxy.

Thanks Andrew. It shows more detail than I normally see with this setup but then again its a fairly large galaxy for Southern Skies.

I did some judicious noise reduction on selected areas. It looks more polished now.

Lovely image Greg!
The colour boost really makes some of those fainter detail pop.
Cheers,

Thanks Justin. Its a good technique as it boosts the colour without increasing the noise which is unusual.

Nice one Greg. I like the colour boost. I'm starting to like quite a bit of saturation--strong but not lurid. My one reservation is that the stars may be a bit hard-edged.

I agree but it takes less than 1 minute to adjust that:
In Photoshop:
select colour range, highlights,
modify, expand, feather, blur by 1 to 2 pixels.
So it's not really a problem.

I softened them a tad. Probably came from some deconvolution early on.
Took 55 seconds! Done, they were a tad harsh.

The small things though make the difference between something that catches your attention and an image that does not have a catch and you just appreciate it.

What's the story on your "Little blue dot"
Is it or isn't it the Supernova

have been coming back to this one quite a bit Greg - spectacular image, but couldn't make up my mind on the colour saturation.
Eventually concluded that it really is an excellent image, with exceptional resolution, but with colour that is a smidgin beyond my comfort zone - which I guess is my problem and not a criticism of the image in any way . Very professional job. Regards Ray

Hi Greg,
Amazing image, maybe the best I've seen of this object. The Ha regions are standing out very nice and the core is full of delicate details hard to catch.
Did I get it wrong or all subs are 5 minutes long ?
I visited your gallery and should say that it is amazing.
Congratulations for the great job,
Fernando

I checked various subs and its in all of them
Its a genuine star not an artifact

Cheers Fred I'll have to pay more attention to noise levels in the
early processing steps and try to get longer subs
Startools is good for low noise processing isn't it?
thanks Luiz cheers

It probably is a tad too much
I have toned it down a bit ready for upload but my internet is down
So maybe a little while b4 I can upload it
Greg
Yes 5 mins as that was the best for guiding with the guide scope
I have since tweaked the guiding and do 10mins and will start trying
15 and 20mins
Cheers Marc
It would make a good internet logo?

The LAB colour boost has worked a treat with this galaxy. The colours are so vibrant without being over saturated. Fantastic work Greg!
